At least 80 county sheriffs and prosecutors have vowed not to enforce the new Illinois gun control law that bans 170 kinds of semi-automatic rifles and places limits on ammunition magazines.
“The right to keep and bear arms for defense of life, liberty and property is regarded as an inalienable right by the people,” said Iroquois County Sheriff Clinton Perzee. “I, among many others, believe that [House Bill 5471] is a clear violation of the 2nd Amendment to the US Constitution,” he added.
Perzee said he would not use his jail to detain people solely for violating the new gun law.
“[N]either myself nor my office will be checking to ensure that lawful gun owners register their weapons with the State, nor will we be arresting or housing law abiding individuals that have been arrested solely with non-compliance of this Act,” Perzee said.
Governor J.B. Pritzker reminded the sheriffs that they took an oath to uphold the law. “As law enforcement, that’s their job and I expect them to do that job,” Pritzker said.
“It’s political grandstanding by elected officials. These are elected sheriffs,” Pritzker said during an evening interview with MSNBC.
Illinois gun rights groups are lining up to sue the state over the law. The “Protect Illinois Communities Act” bans 170 brands of semi-automatic rifles, limits ammunition magazines in pistols and rifles, and forces those with legal semi-automatic rifles to register their guns by Jan. 1, 2024.

It’s about time people start exercising their 2a rights.
What are the 170 kinds? I can’t find a list.
Make the yellowbellied, RAT politicians come and take ‘em. No use forcing law enforcement people to sacrifice their futures for RAT politics.
Second amendment sanctuary counties?
This is good news because local law enforcement is the force that will be called on to seize resisters and non compliants firearms.
A young municipal police officer I know very well was advised by his supervisor to arrest a vagrant. However, he could not cite a law or town ordnance that the vagrant was violating.
Since it was ultimately his call, as the beat officer, he declined to arrest the vagrant.
He told me later that he swore to uphold and defend the Constitution, even if he had to defend it from the people he works for.
Yes Pritzker it’s political theatre what YOU are doing by signing an unconstitutional law. It’s Opposite Day in Illinois! What part of SHALL NOT BE INFRINGED is so hard to understand?
All that time and money wasted just to have it overturned in the courts
Lake county is a surprise (to me) it's typically a Red County, though it's trended purple in the last few years.
There about 7-8 counties that haven't issued statements at all, most in rural farming areas so they may just be 'flying under the radar' and choosing not to enforce it.
The remaining counties have all said they either won't support it at all, or support the 2nd Amendment.
As for me being a resident of HELLINOIS, I will not comply.
Especially knowing the state of records at the ATF, the fact they're not easily searchable, many lost records due to document damage/water damage, and that only approximately 1,000 record requests a day can be serviced.
Further, the State of HELLINOIS can't even find the 'resources' to get guns out of the hands of convicted felons in this state, who in their right mind thinks they'll have enough resources to come after every legal gun owner?
They can't. Anyone who "certifies" (that's the language in the bill, it's GUN REGISTRATION by any other name) their weapons with the state is an IDIOT.
When this "law" is found to be un-Constitutional as I fully expect it will be based on the lawyers for the gun club I'm a member of filing suitagainst it, only a FOOL would believe the State of HELLINOIS would delete the data they collected from all the IDIOTS who registered their weapon.
HELLINOIS RESIDENTS: DO NOT COMPLY!!
It’s about time the sheriffs started being vocal like this about their sworn constitutional duties. Good on them.
The same goes for all law enforcement. Let’s see if they all follow suit.
102 counties in Illinois
At least 80 Sheriffs wont comply.
Illinois, like many other states, isn’t as Blue as it’s made out to be.
Get rid of Chicago and is as Red as it can get.
Wow, 80 counties. How many counties total in IL?
The other distinguishing characteristic is that usually they cannot name their father or pick him out of a lineup.
Correct. This was all political theatre on the part of the Democrats here in HELLINOIS to placate a significant portion of their base.
Prickster KNOWS this is going to be overturned either by the IL Supreme Court (pretty good chance it happens though not guaranteed) or at the US Supreme Court which said expressly in the Bruen decision this type of law is a non-starter and violates the Second Amendment.
The hypocrisy of IL Democrats is on full display as they're going to be voting soon to make HELLINOIS a "sanctuary state" for abortion, and advocate for the killing of unborn children while simultaneously stripping legal gun owners of our rights to self defense through the Second Amendment.
It's freaking ridiculous.
Or the National guard.
Similar to the SCOTUS Marbury v Madison decision notably increased Court power in the US.
Not unconstitutional laws - which are to be rejected as null and void.
County sheriffs are usually elected and don’t answer to local mayors, etc.
