With a cold wind blowing, family, friends and neighbors of Karon Blake memorialized the 13-year-old who was shot to death last weekend by a homeowner in D.C.’s Brookland neighborhood.
In an emotional display, Blake’s little sister dissolved into tears while speaking. His friend Marco stepped to the microphone, addressing those who came to the evening vigil.
“I would have just never expected it to be Karon,” Marco said. “I literally just saw him like two days before the news happened.”
The brief ceremony included a number of stories remembering Karon’s humor, intellect and meaning to the small community.

Robert Brannum with D.C.’s chapter of the NAACP was in attendance and mourning Saturday evening as well. He called on the community to come together.
-----
Blake was shot and killed after a city employee, currently on leave, claimed that Blake attempted to steal a car near his home. Officials said no additional identifying information will be made available pending an investigation.

What kind of world is it where a 13 year old can't go out in the middle of the night to break into private property without getting shot? The horror!
The car owner hasn't been identified other than he is a DC city employee.
Not only breaking into a car but doing it with 2 others and attack the owner who defended himself.
But no black mother should have to worry about her son being killed just doing his job.
more to it than an innocent teen walking the street minding his own business
The car owner has also been identified as being black. Can’t pin this one on whitey.
“The car owner has also been identified as being black. Can’t pin this one on whitey.”
They’ll find a way.
The only reason they’re shielding his identity is because it’s a black DC gov employee. A “white supremacist” would be suspended and paraded immediately.
How about remembering Ashley Babbitt?
The "transparency" this nation-wide community seeks is the courage and honesty to look into why its culture is failing.
The car owner has also been identified as being black. Can’t pin this one on whitey.
Good point. He wasn’t shot for stealing a car, he was shot for being part of a gang that assaulted a man trying to prevent a car theft.
Be something if it was that Byrd guy. The one that shot Ashley Babbitt. He’s pretty quick on the trigger.
His status as a DC employee is being mentioned to try to make the story more dramatic.
“The car owner hasn’t been identified other than he is a DC city employee.”
He/She is Black and He/She works for Biden or the Democrat party. That is why they have not been identified.
Apparently, he is also a home owner & a CAR OWNER
Interesting cultural divide between black and white. Blacks are asking why was Karon shot 3 or 4 times just for breaking into a car. Whites are probably asking “What is a 13 year old doing running around with friends at 4 AM instead of being at home”?
It would be nice to talk about issues, such as the breakdown of the black family, and the severe problems with youth gangs in so many minority communities.
But that’s one of the subjects we just don’t hear talked about in this country.
In this case, we decry the death of a 13 year old boy, without asking what the hell he is doing out at 4 am involved in suspicious activity. We don’t ask where the heck his parents are. We don’t ask who his pals were, who odds are were part of a youth gang. We just aren’t allowed to talk about any of that, lest we be condemned as racist.
That would be the professional athletes and entertainment figures, firemen, policemen, lawyers, judges, successful business and medical professionals and every local individual that would serve as a role model.
Just as important in this regard are mothers qualified to speak to the difficulties and indeed the danger of trying to raise young boys/men without two parents in the house.
Such an effort would have real value and meaning and be infinitely more effective than any form of reparations.
That a kid from that neighborhood would be involved in stupid crime is really sad all the way around. I hope the shooting was legal, although I have questions whether you can shoot from a distance because you see your car being broken into.
Oh, it wasn't a cop? Well, he was white and that is the same thing.
Uh, what? The shooter was Black? Well, it may as well been a white cop.
Such a tragedy! His life cut short by gun violence! He was just turning his life around and was looking forward to middle school. Now his kids will be without a daddy!
