Salesforce and Amazon announced major layoffs on Wednesday, beginning 2023 with significant cuts during what has already been a brutal period for the tech sector.
Amazon announced that its layoffs will impact more than 18,000 employees - the highest number so far at a major tech company.
Salesforce will lay off 10 percent of its workforce - or about 8,000 workers - after a period of over-hiring, according to its Co-CEO Marc Benioff, who said he took 'full responsibility' for the decision.
As the tech sector, and the economy as a whole, suffers, rumors have begun to circulate that original Amazon founder and CEO Jeff Bezos is mulling a comeback after the company's shares fell by more than half last year.
The prediction was issued by Michael Batnick at Ritholtz Wealth Management, who noted that Bezos could return to his ailing company, as Bob Iger did to Disney just weeks ago.
Salesforce, the largest private employer in San Francisco, joined a list of companies that are now saying they over-hired during the pandemic to become bloated just in time for the tech market to tank.
The business-software provider said that 'the environment remains challenging and our customers are taking a more measured approach to their purchasing decisions.'
Salesforce hired aggressively during the first two years of the pandemic as companies purchased products in order to pivot to remote work. The company also acquired the popular work message application Slack during that time.
Most of the layoffs will occur over the coming weeks, according to Benioff. The company's stock has plummeted nearly 46 percent in the last year.

Good. Tech companies need to start behaving like businesses instead of college fraternities.
Now that things have cooled down, Amazon can get lean for the New Year. As a bonus they should be able to RIF the union troublemakers while they're at it. Looks like a win from any perspective.
Just good, I want those bastards to feel the pain normal working Americans have had inflicted on them. I want these woke bastards to suffer the torments of hell. Our lives would be so much better with much less ‘tech’.

GREATEST ECONOMY EVAH!!!!!
BidenDepression II 2023
All those monthly Covid checks sent to people staying home and ordering from Amazon are going away.

Also, they would be adopting more automation making some workers needless.
I do think this is something that needs to be studied, and
yes it is probably worse than things have been before. I
am still reminded that Amazon hires a ton of employees each
holiday season, and lays them off after the holidays.
Here we’re talking about Amazon letting 18,000 go.
In October they were talking about hiring 150,000 for the
holiday season. These were full time, part time (and
seasonal) if that is somehow different.
Check this out.
If so followed by Biden World War with Russia 2024. It would work. Many freepers would stupidly rally round the flag. China would be the ultimate great beneficiary
My ex-wife (who I have remained close to all these years) is a tech Luddite. She has a computer but doesn't use it much. Doesn't communicate via email. Thinks youtube is watching "her" instead of vice-versa. Her phone isn't smart so she can't send or receive text messages.
She is a perfect example of a case where adding tech to one's life would be a big improvement.
As an aside, I was telling her about an article that she would find very interesting and she asked if I could mail it to her. That is "snail mail" it to her. I told her to fuggedaboutit.
There isn’t a world war when Russia has no allies that would fight on the side of Russia - not even Belarus.
And Russia is already losing in Ukraine to Ukrainians.
A bankrupt nation (really all of the West, plus a lot of other nations)
Depression
Global War
Population Reduction
New World Order
Antichrist (the anti-messiah of Satan)
Social Credit score - 666 approval to Buy and Sell (eventually)
It’s quite obvious that American sovereignty is being destroyed - the only end game can be a global government - but that’s just tinfoil, of course (images to follow)
I was in telephony in the years leading up to Y2K. Selling and installing phones system in the years after the break up of the Bell monopoly was a good and steady business.
Things changed in the last few years of the 21st century as a potential software error was “discovered” in that all the programming for years was just two digits! When the year 2000 rolled around the system would “think” it was 1900. For some it would not make any difference but for others it would.
The sales department of most tech companies used Y2K as a reason company must upgrade are bad things would happen. In the final two years before Y2K our business expanded and the tech staff grew from five to over thirty and our office was doing a million a month in sales, happy times for everyone.
Then Y2K happened and the only disaster that happen was we (the company, not me personally) discovered we sold all future sales in the past two years and the market was saturated. No one was buying except new start ups, which was not enough to pay the overhead of all the staff brought on board during the run up to Y2K and within months we were back down to minimum staff.
The point is tech companies have expanded beyond what the current market in their products can pay for. Layoffs and cutting expenses was inevitable. The current “golden age” of technology is over (until the next new thing).

Funny you should mention Y2K. It was at that time I began studying what could happen with computers and telecommunications in the coming years. I was a student of terrorism as it then existed, and though I felt the computer was a wonderful thing (my involvement went all the way back to Wang and Lanier), I visualized the instrument was becoming much too intrusive and actually could become a danger to both provider and user. It was about that time I joined FR, which was then a wonderful introduction and a site for locating what would otherwise be esoteric information. Since that time, I have eschewed the tech newbies, always seeking an alternative to the Microsofts and Amazons. I remain a small voice crying in the wilderness. But I have fought the good fight.

In what way?
Btw regular mail is extremely useful. I use it to pay bills.. helps maintain relationships in my community.
Well, for one, she could read and maybe even comment on Free Republic.
Secondly, she could have access to significantly more news.
Thirdly, a lot of her friends just aren't going to express themselves "off-the-cuff" or "extemporaneously" over the phone the way they would in a quick email or text message.
Fourthly, she's missing all those funny cat videos on youtube.
Fifthly...(I could go on, but you get the picture).
“Tech companies need to start behaving like businesses instead of college fraternities.”
They need to start acting like businesses instead of government censors.
The “golden age” of technology may be over for the US, just as our golden age of manufacturing is over. Technology in particular has set up an atmosphere where much of the current and future work and wealth associated with tech can pass us by completely.
