WASHINGTON — For a second consecutive day, a band of 20 ultraconservative rebels blocked GOP leader Kevin McCarthy from winning the speaker’s gavel, just hours after former President Donald Trump called on House Republicans to back him and "close the deal."
Between Tuesday and Wednesday, six votes were held on the House floor to choose a speaker; each time, the rebels stuck together and voted for someone else, denying McCarthy the 218 votes he needed to win.
With both McCarthy allies and foes deeply dug in, it ensures that chaos will reign in the House for the foreseeable future under the new GOP majority.
During the fourth, fifth and sixth ballots on Wednesday, McCarthy — a California Republican who has served in leadership for the past 14 years — received support from more than 90% of the 222 GOP members. Earlier in the day, he was nominated by Rep. Warren Davidson, R-Ohio, a member of the far-right Freedom Caucus who warned his fellow conservatives that their opposition will end up hurting their cause.
"We're on the precipice of such a destructive argument today. I plead with all— all of my Republican colleagues, let cooler, more rational heads prevail. Let us unite as Republicans to elect the next Speaker of the House," Davidson said.
But the McCarthy foes showed no signs of backing down. In the three votes Wednesday, they rallied behind Rep. Byron Donalds, a Black Florida conservative who won his second term in November.
Firebrand Rep. Lauren Boebert, R-Colo., nominated her fellow Freedom Caucus colleague, Donalds, saying she was not swayed by Trump — "my favorite president" — calling her to tell her to "knock this off."
"The president needs to tell Kevin McCarthy that, 'sir, you do not have the votes and it’s time to withdraw,'" Boebert said of Trump to scattered boos.

Looks like it ticked off 20 people. The other 202...not so much. If the TWENTY really want to show they’re ticked off, maybe they should stay in their offices and allow Dems to elect Jeffries Speaker. That would really show their anger at McCarthy.
That is similar to what the British said about our founding Fathers...
I know. Which is why a steel cage match would be the ideal solution.
THIS...along with removing certain Rino's from the chairs of key committees and balancing a few procedural points ought to be all the 20 hard core R's talk about - and they should be delivering that message every chance they get!
Pelosi gave herself additional powers by tweaking the House Rules and is now being positioned by the Dems for the history books as the best Speaker of all times. Our nation is in a street fight and the R's need to effectively respond in kind - it is in fact a step toward draining the swamp.
Always follow the money with these bums. Always.
Bring back Newt! It may be our only hope.
Refusal to yield in the face of overwhelming odds was the key to success for both Washington and Churchill. Nothing will change in the Swamp until members of the House stand up and refuse to be bribed or intimidated. What’s happening now is long overdue.
With McCarthy, nothing will change, just meaningless investigations that will end with a whimper,
At this point, screw it. Gum up the works. Kudos to the 20 holdouts. F this RINO Frank Lutz / Paul RYNO MFer.
Goetz needs to nominate Trump and see how many votes he gets.
“So true, exposing the club for what it is “ all about the benjamins, and themselves” not “ we the people”
Absolutely... :)
Anyone who doesn’t believe that shutting down the entire government until the FBI and CIA are gutted and rebuilt from the ground up is not fit to be speaker.
I am 60% sure Jordan and Donalds won’t do it but I am 100% sure McCarthy won’t do it.
“Why Trump’s endorsement of McCarthy did not have more of an effect (which was none) than it did.”
For me, I had hopes that Trump would learn from all his bad calls in his first term that kept backstabbing him. Then he gets behind Ronna Romney and McCarthy (who even threatened to impeach Trump)
“McCarthy said he would alert the former president of his plans to begin an impeachment trial if he did not resign.”
what’s the new church committee?
exactly!
As far as I’m concerned, it should be illegal for telecom to have any influence or control over the news and general public information.
Not surprising Vannity is siding with the Uniparty on this one instead of the conservatives.
“3 more votes and McCarthy will tie a record.
9 votes to elect Speaker in 1923.”
Not even close. The most rounds to elect a speaker was in 1855, when it took 2 months and 133 rounds.

Trump is ending his own political career and showing himself to be the non-ideologue he has always been. Chastising the pro-life base and blaming them on the losses was kinda the last straw. He is losing support and will likely not be the nominee. We’re tired of being attacked for what we believe and we’re tired of leaders who are ideologically melonheads.
And yet, Trump was the one and only Republican President that got Roe V. Wade overturned....
Matt Gaetz
@mattgaetz
McCarthy is losing it.
He texted one of my colleagues who didn’t vote for him:
“I am ready to fund an endless war”
I’m assuming this is in *addition* to Ukraine.
“then put it in writing!”
As if he won’t break a promise just because it’s in writing.
Ask Grover Norquist how that goes with his little “no new taxes” pledge he pesters everyone to sign.
