To rise through the Trump-era G.O.P., a young congresswoman gave up her friends, her mentors and her ideals. Will it be enough?
....For years, Ms. Stefanik had crafted her brand as a model moderate millennial — “the future of hopeful, aspirational politics in America,” as her mentor, Paul Ryan, would describe her in Time magazine. But as her third term unfolded, according to current or former friends and advisers, it was becoming painfully clear that she was the future of a Republican Party that no longer existed. The party was now firmly controlled by Donald J. Trump, a populist president she didn’t like or respect — a “whack job,” as she as she once described him in a message obtained by The New York Times. Fox hosts attacked her for not supporting Mr. Trump enough. Her friends criticized her for not opposing him more forcefully. You don’t understand, she would tell them. You don’t get how hard this is. Democrats were back in charge in the House. Mr. Ryan was gone, driven into early retirement. She told friends she was thinking of joining him. Instead she embarked on one of the most brazen political transformations of the Trump era.

If it’s in the NYT it’s a lie.
That’s a lot of ink by the Slimes. They must be scared. She’s not liked by the swamp on both sides.
Having Paul Ryan as a mentor was her first mistake.
Think it’s a lie or not, if I’m not mistaken she was one of the first to vote for one of the Democrats budget disasters early in this administration.
The only reason she mouths any Trump is to get re-elected. If, at any time in one’s political life, they align with Ryan, they’re a RINO at best.
And, most of the NY Republican’s are no better, if not worse, to include Maliotakis.
She has redeemed herself.
“Having Paul Ryan as a mentor was her first mistake.”
And then he was ‘driven into retirement’.
Just another anti Trump hit piece.
She has redeemed herself.
Perhaps the scales have fallen from her eyes and she sees clearly now.
NYT tryna drive some wedges.
Ain’t gonna work.
If she aligned with Paul Ryan early in her career, it was to get elected in a deep blue state. In my opinion, she redeemed herself by become one of President Trump's House Managers during his impeachment. A Republican can't get any more aligned with MAGA than that.

She’s a thoroughly modern millennial.
She does things clinical, annual and tricentenial.
....
Good post.
Screw you, Times. What about the invention of AOC you foisted on the rest of us?
Tell us, oh sages, what has she done that helped even one of her constituents?
I don’t care if this article is true or not.
I DO NOT TRUST Stefanik.
She defended President Trump because of an issue dealing with Ukraine. If it weren’t for that, we would have never heard from her.
I’d put Elise up against ANY Democrat (or Independent), any day . . .
I’m not sure, but I don’t think the New York Times endorsed DJT in 2016 or 2020.
So there’s that . . .
She defended Trump by exposing Comey and his spying way before Ukraine.
I’ve information vegetable, animal, and mineral,
The RINOs of the GOP, I can quote McCain historical.
From Gerald Ford to Romney, in order categorical;
I’m very well acquainted, too, with matters electorial,
I understand the things to say to reel in clingers quadratical,
About Sunday Morning Talk shows, I’m teeming with a lot o’ news,
With many facts I’ll spin today with Jour-no-lists I like to schmooze...
Very good!
I couldn’t remember enough of the lyrics.
