If you die in one of these radio shack specials at least your helping to save the earth!
When AI isn’t busy trying to kill us, it spends its time scrambling our language into gibberish.
Any damage to an EV battery, whether it causes a fire or not, means the car is totaled. You need gap insurance or you may lose a lot of dough if this happens. A vehicle striking the car from the side or a collision with a fixed object can total the battery.
Finally, all those silly movie cliches about every crashing car exploding into flame are coming true!
Tesla - The Michael Bay Edition
Exactly.
Given the current state of battery tech the crop of EVs we have are dangerous and impractical.
They have a battery chemistry that generates it’s own oxygen when they combust...not good at all! I recall the oxygen-rich air in the Apollo capsule that caught fire and killed 3 brave astronauts in the 70’s :-(
The best car you could have with the technology at hand is IMO a diesel-electric hybrid. A car with a smallish 4-cylinder diesel that charges up a modest battery bank with a stable and safe chemistry, like the LiFePO4 cells, they weigh about twice as much as the current crop of EV cells but you can drill holes through the cells and they will not sustain combustion.
It would appear that such a diesel-electric would have very poor acceleration but actually they can be designed to switch to electric motors if you tromp on the gas... for a short while the LiFePO4 battery bank could deliver acceleration as good as or better than the hot-rods of old.
Use the electric engines when in dense city traffic to lower pollution and still have all the power to get out of a situation quickly if you need to.. Plus diesel is far less explosive than gas, you can almost put a fire out by throwing diesel on it.
And imagine getting stuck in a snowdrift for hours in an EV, you will freeze.. but the diesel-electric hybrid would chug along making wonderful heat for you :-)
Expect to see much, much more of this reporting.
Musk is now the enemy of the left (and I am certainly no “defender of the EV faith”).
Musk has painted himself into a corner he of all people should have seen coming, and I fault his late awakening (better late than never, but his price in particular is very, very high).
My ‘18 Honda CRV pretty much drives itself on the Interstate/freeway. Lane assist, adaptive cruise control, and blind-spot monitoring. I’ve seen it steer through corners, brake when the car in front slows down or stops, all with no input from me. But I don’t trust it to do those things. Hands are always on the wheel and my right foot is ready to hit the brakes.
And yes, IC cars can catch fire after an accident, but those fires can easily be put out. As I understand it, battery fires can be tricky.
Oversized electric golf kart fanbois will not approve of this thread.
You’d be amazed how many features are included because the builder thinks it’s a great idea nd wants to be “cutting edge”, or it’s cheaper, etc. - or they are complying with some asinine gov dictat. Not just in cars, but lots of things, including house features.
Oftentimes, the designer drives the trends, not the public. They are just convinced it’s the way to go.
Grow up.
BAN electric vehicles, and BAN politicians who want to require them!!!!
That was actually a good movie........
Not the crappy remake.
No perfected yet—that’s all. Lots of steam engines blew up before they figured them out in the early 19th Century.
“My ‘18 Honda CRV pretty much drives itself on the Interstate/freeway.”
Our 2019 Honda passport does the same thing. We turned all that off because it kept slamming on the brakes when it didn’t need to, angering drivers behind us. It also warned of collisions when no collision danger existed on winding roads. It also shook the wheel when trying to give cars on narrow winding roads a little extera room. It was a pain so it’s disconnected.
Exact a mundo
I think we can also expect to see the main stream media suddenly discover that "pristine" parts of the environment are being destroyed by the mining needed to make ev's. They will also discover that, gasp, children around the world are being exploited in the mining of minerals used to manufacture ev's.
While I hope this leaves them in a quandary as to what to do to save the environment, I know it won't. They will simply declare Teslas to be evil because, you know, Musk is worse than a Nazi, and they will move to VW's ev's because the company was started by a mere Nazi. (In Whoopi parlance, Hitler isn't a Nazi, Nazi, but Musk is much worse than a Nazi.)
