Mike Lee rips military for stopping pay for Navy officer imprisoned in Japan
Desert News ^ | Dec 22 | By Dennis Romboy

Sen. Mike Lee called out Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin for cutting off the pay of Navy Lt. Ridge Alkonis while he serves a three-year prison sentence in Japan.

“Secretary Austin callously informed me that day that the request for the exception to policy would not be granted. I asked him why. He believed it wasn’t appropriate for the department to do that,” the Utah Republican said last week in a Senate floor speech, referring to a Nov. 29 phone call with the secretary.

The Department of Defense’s decision to not extend Alkonis’ pay and benefits while he serves his sentence amounts to having his wife, Brittany, and three children “kicked to the curb” at Christmas time, Lee said.

Lee has blasted the military in a string of tweets on his personal account @BasedMikeLee over the past few days.

“@SecDef, please don’t stop paying Lt. Ridge Alkonis. You shouldn’t be hanging him and his family out to dry ten days from now,” he said.

Alkonis was convicted of negligent driving in the deaths of an 85-year-old Japanese woman and her 54-year-old son-in-law on May 29, 2021, while the family was driving down Mount Fuji after a day trip.

A Japanese judge determined that Alkonis had fallen asleep at the wheel and lost control of his vehicle, which plowed into pedestrians and parked cars in a restaurant parking lot two hours from Yokosuka Naval Base, where he was serving as anti-submarine warfare officer.

But U.S. Navy investigators determined that Alkonis suffered from acute mountain sickness and lost consciousness. His wife and children said that he was not sleepy and appeared to black out. They said that once he passed out, he was unresponsive to their screams and one daughter’s kicks. He remained unconscious even during the crash itself.

This is rare but pleased to tell you the U.S. Senate voted for Mike Lee's amendment on the omnibus bill to restore this gentleman's pay and benefits.

Merry Christmas!

Mike Lee is busy replacing thousands of highly paid IT workers with (H1B) Indian migrants. But nobody is allowed to talk about that!

He's not replacing anything, his bill was to provide additional funding for H1B holders to become resident aliens or citizens, to alleviate or cure the backlog, which is part of the H1B program.

Those people are already here.

So whoever is feeding you that story is doing it for other purposes and it is not to keep you informed.

The whole H-1B visa is a scam created to undercut US workers. Anyone justifying it is a traitor. The need to be exiled to India.

Marines told to stop using ‘sir,’ ‘ma’am’ to avoid ‘misgendering’ superiors

“Employing gender-neutral identifiers eliminates the possibility of misgendering drill instructors, which can unintentionally offend or cause discord,” the study said.

“By teaching recruits to use gender-neutral identifiers for their drill instructors, Services underscore the importance of respecting authoritative figures regardless of gender.”

I'm no medical expert but I have had an experience at high altitudes. A few years ago I drove up to the highest point of the paved road up Mount Evans, about an hour west of Denver. Getting out of my car I was intending to walk the last 200 feet to the very top (14,200 feet). After taking only a few steps toward the walkway I couldn't go any farther...I had to stop.

A couple of weeks later I had a routine appointment with my Cardiologist. I mentioned what happened at Mount Evans. He said "well,no wonder you couldn't walk...the air was too thin for you up there".

Seems to me that it was this officer's duty to research his visit from a health consequences standpoint. If I had caused someone's death on my visit I expect I would have been charged with *something*...even if oxygen deprivation was the actual cause.

I absolutely do feel sorry for that officer however.

I agree. I live in a small suburban town which has many, many apartment units *and* which has a very large high tech firm as well. A huge percentage of these apartment units are occupied by Indians (the Asian kind) who work at this high tech firm.

Although I can't prove it I'd wager that these Indians make half...or less than half...what an American worker would expect.

H1Bs are a knife in the back of American tech workers.

America should be ashamed for strip mining human capital from developing nations.

They all should be sent back to their rightful home (India).
All they do here is take our jobs.

Very glad to hear that. Sounds like a medical issue, and
should have been seen as that from the start.

Other nations will do what they will do, but our people
should be able to determine there was something else going
on here out the man’s control.

Hate to hear two people were killed. What a sad part of this.

It's a scam. Under an H1B visa you gain rights to permanent residency after 3 years, and as such need to remain employed for 3 years.

Companies that hire H1B's know they are unlikely to quit and will hire them salaried and work them for 70-80 hours a week, and can fire at will. They have no problem firing H1B's as they are unlikely to claim unemployment and if they are not able to satisfy their 'contract' they must return to their home country and may not be eligible to return for 5 years.

So, they're unlikely to job hunt, unlikely to claim unemployment (due to starting removal clock), and unlikely to complain as it may result in unemployment. All the while working 70-80 hour weeks. All of these are things most Americans would be unwilling to do or put up with.

It’s possible to recognize the good a senator does. Mike Lee has been on fire🔥 recently especially on the omnibus.

You could lobby him to see sense on H1Bs. That is your right.

There are things Rand does and supports from time to time that I hate. No one is 100%.

“...make half...or less than half...what an American worker would expect.”

One of the main requirements for an H1B visa is that the employer guarantees to pay the H1B holder the “prevailing wage” for their position.

The prevailing wage is defined as the average salary paid to similarly qualified workers in the same geographical area. Ensuring that H1B workers are paid at or above the prevailing wage provides that they are not used as cheap labor and undercuts the wages of U.S. workers.
