Go woke, go broke! San Francisco mayor warns crime-ridden city now faces a $728m budget deficit over next two years, as remote work caused property taxes and public transit ridership to slump

San Francisco's mayor is asking municipal departments to find significant savings as the embattled city braces for a $728 million budget deficit, predicted for the next two fiscal years.

With some of the lowest office occupancy rates in the country, thanks to the tech companies that make the city's lifeblood retreating to remote work, San Francisco has seen residents move to the suburbs - pushed also by rising crime.

The city's income from property taxes and office rates has plummeted, causing sleepless nights in City Hall.

London Breed, the mayor, on Thursday asked municipal departments to identify ways to reduce costs by 5 percent in the next fiscal year and by 8 percent in the year after that.

'We know the challenges facing San Francisco are significant, and we have a lot of work ahead of us to maintain the city's recovery efforts,' Breed said in a statement.

'As we work to close this deficit, it will require tough choices and real tradeoffs.'

Breed must submit a balanced plan on June 1 to the board of supervisors for the years beginning in July 2023 and July 2024.

Breed's team now believe the situation is worsening, and expect business taxes over the next two years to decline by $179.3 million from previous estimates.

Property taxes, usually a stable revenue source in downturns, are now projected over the same period to drop by $261 million from the earlier forecast.

I know - let's give black and Pacific Island mothers mothers $1,000 a month with nothing expected in return. There's plenty of money in the city's budget:

San Francisco to give $1,000 monthly stipend to pregnant Black, Pacific Islander women

Pregnant Black and Pacific Islander women in San Francisco will get a $1,000 monthly supplement during and after their pregnancy in a first of its kind initiative meant to help improve health outcomes for both the mom and the baby.

Perhaps it's time for San Francisco government to follow the lead of Twitter, Meta, and Amazon:

Layoffs across the board.

Not to mention paring the welfare rolls.

I’d be surprised if the transit system makes money.
Now the city pays the transit workers whether anyone rides or not.

I’m also surprised that they lower the property taxes. Around here if they reassess, they rebalance the property taxes so as to be revenue neutral.

San Francisco has seen residents move to the suburbs - pushed also by rising crime.

Meanwhile, in South San Francisco (a separate city in San Mateo County to the south of SF) business is booming, with crowded stores, restaurants and traffic. Lots of workers working from home in SSF and spending their money there, rather than in SF. Malls, restaurants, businesses in South SF doing very well. Very little crime as compared to San Francisco. However, lots of street traffic.

Let me guess. They will raise taxes.

If taxes are to be raised for San Fran, I believe 'every' productive American will be paying them.

Uncle Joe will find a way to funnel federal money to bankrupt blue cities like San Fran. Shoot - Congress has been in the business of bailing out their constituents for years. Most recently - Biden and his Congress bailed out the Teamsters pension fund to the tune of $36 billion. Remember the 2007 recession? Congress passed the Emergency Economic Stabilization Act of 2008. The act created the Troubled Asset Relief Program (TARP), which authorized the U.S. Department of the Treasury to buy up to $700 billion in toxic assets from companies, which could then replenish their balance sheets with safer assets.

Money is no problem for the federal government. When they need more they print more. LOL!!

873,965 people in 2020. It went down to 815,201 in 2021.

That’s just a shame.

But at least we know they will always find enough money to care for the illegal aliens at the expense of the mentally ill homeless people roaming the streets.

Would cities dare to start phony lock downs for a phony pandemic to get more federal dollars???

NAH. They wouldn’t think of it.

Used to be: "Get woke, go broke."

"Go woke" is less clever and less rhythmic.

Maybe the USA should start distributing our mentally ill homeless to the sender countries?

Or, maybe our mentally ill homeless should renounce their USA citizenship and then request USA asylum?

Hilarious

More than 19,000 of their so called employees receive $150,000 or more in their W4 each year.
