San Francisco's mayor is asking municipal departments to find significant savings as the embattled city braces for a $728 million budget deficit, predicted for the next two fiscal years.
With some of the lowest office occupancy rates in the country, thanks to the tech companies that make the city's lifeblood retreating to remote work, San Francisco has seen residents move to the suburbs - pushed also by rising crime.
The city's income from property taxes and office rates has plummeted, causing sleepless nights in City Hall.
London Breed, the mayor, on Thursday asked municipal departments to identify ways to reduce costs by 5 percent in the next fiscal year and by 8 percent in the year after that.
'We know the challenges facing San Francisco are significant, and we have a lot of work ahead of us to maintain the city's recovery efforts,' Breed said in a statement.
'As we work to close this deficit, it will require tough choices and real tradeoffs.'
Breed must submit a balanced plan on June 1 to the board of supervisors for the years beginning in July 2023 and July 2024.
Breed's team now believe the situation is worsening, and expect business taxes over the next two years to decline by $179.3 million from previous estimates.
Property taxes, usually a stable revenue source in downturns, are now projected over the same period to drop by $261 million from the earlier forecast.

San Francisco has not had a Republican Mayor since 1964. The last few years the level of incompetence and lack of law enforcement has brought the city to where it is. People and businesses leaving as fast as they can and the result is the total cratering of their tax base and revenues and they are not coming back.
The city from here on out will lose the rich and businesses as they run away from the absolute sinkhole the city has become. The question is it reversible or a permanent decline that is accelerating?

It’s about time the Biden government sends some millions to them along with the billions to Ukraine and the money to finance women who want to travel to another state to get an abortion. 🤬
San Francisco is building single public toilet that will cost $1.7 million. So here’s my suggestion to help fight the city’s deficit: Put a 25 cent door lock on that toilet. Wanna use the facilities? Pay a quarter.

It appears that conservatives were correct on almost every issue regarding Covid and the economic harm caused by governments’ response. As we were with Trump/Russian collusion, Hunter Biden’s laptop, First Amendment violations by the democrats, suppression and banning of conservative voices on Twitter, harm of the Covid vax, inflation, and a lot of other issues over the past few years.
Yet even as “conspiracy theories” have turned into spoiler alerts, the left and their media mouthpieces continue to insist WE are the problem and a threat to our nation.

My parents lived in Milbrae when I was born in 1952 (Alameda naval air station hospital). In the late 60s my father predicted just what we are seeing now for that area and all of California.
That’s a shame.
