The U.S. House of Representatives passed a bill during its lame-duck session Thursday in a last-ditch effort to allow Puerto Rico to “decolonize.”
The bill, which passed 233-191 with support from 16 Republicans and has very little chance of passing the Senate, would allow the U.S. territory to hold a first-ever binding referendum on whether to become a state or gain independence. It would ultimately offer the Puerto Rico voters three options: statehood, independence, or independence with free association.

So that's why we need to grant independence to Puerto Rico. But we'll make a deal. After the independence of Puerto Rico, they get one year to claim Ameican citizenship (they have to move to mainland).
My prediction. 50% of the population will leave. But the island will not have to pay U.S. federal taxes (which is the case at the moment) and they will have to secure their economic independence. So if they clean up their act, there's a lot of potential. Or it'll become the next Haiti.
Let’s hold the referendum after the next big hurricane hits.
This morning I decolon-ized something a lot like Puerto Rico.
This is fluffy window-dressing. As long as they have an option to stay with the US, they will - otherwise they’d have to actually pay the GINORMOUS debt that island is floating on. They’ll NEVER option to be independent, as they’d default immediately.
Point was well made here that WE should decide what to do with Puerto Rico, not keep asking them what they want.
They’ve always had commonwealth status quo on the ballot. Statehood meant taxes and English. Independence was too terrible to contemplate. Status quo was just right. Remove status quo and no one will be happy.
Not a bad idea if it would allow ALL states and U.S. territories to hold a binding referendum on whether to remain / become a state or gain independence.
Socialism/communism will always be popular among those who think they can get something for nothing. The poor are easily persuaded and so this new "law" is about creating new Democrat voters.
We should take on their debt and grant them independence.
Abraham Lincoln said no. Puerto Rico is a territory. So they're not in the Union.
It seems that every few years the issue of Puerto Rico statehood or Independence is discussed.
Haven’t they had numerous referendums over the past few decades on this very subject?
Whatever the case it seems like there’s no strong consensus to make any changes.
The obvious solution is to make AOC the Czarina of Puerto Rico and spin it off to either Cuba or Venezuela.
It's about dims not liking the result of previous referendums and trying a new “trick” to get passed what they want without coming out and saying they want this so they can have more Congressional seats. They are feeling the pressure to get it done before J1 hoping they can get enough Republican Senators to go home for the holidays and then ram it through that body. It's pure trickster tactics. Puerto Rico citizens have been smart enough to vote for the status quo as the least bad choice of the three offered. Hispanics are waking up to the sneaky dims and don't want to give them the chance to institutionalize a bad outcome.
How much insanity can be packed into a single month?
Every time Puerto Rico has voted about this issue for the past 50 years, the vote is always 50 - 50 and that is the truth. Most Puerto Ricans realize that the status quo is the best option. They certainly do not want statehood because of all of the baggage which goes with it. The communists are the ones seeking independence from us.
It has been some time since I last explored the topic, but I believe the action has to be initiated from their side, or we’d have likely booted them long ago.
3 of the 4 components of the Trust Territory of the Pacific Islands went independent but then signed compacts of free association.
Northern Mariana Islands - stayed a commonwealth (like PR)
Palau - left USA
Marshall Islands - left USA
Micronesia - left USA
Wormer?
