Former President Donald Trump leads Gov. Ron DeSantis (R-FL) by almost 20 points in a hypothetical 2024 Republican primary matchup, according to a poll.

A Morning Consult Poll released Tuesday shows that 49 percent of potential GOP primary voters support Trump in his bid for the nomination, placing him 18 points ahead of his nearest competitor, DeSantis, at 31 percent. No other potential challenger eclipsed the ten percent mark.

2024 National Republican Primary:

Trump 49% (+18)
DeSantis 31%
Pence 8%
Haley 2%
Cheney 2%
Cruz 2%
Abbott 1%
Noem 1%
Pompeo 1%
Youngkin 1%
T. Scott 0%

— Political Polls (@Politics_Polls) December 13, 2022

Eight percent of the respondents support former President Mike Pence, placing him in third place, followed by former U.S. Ambassador to the United Nations Nikki Haley, Sen. Ted Cruz (R-TX), and outgoing Rep. Liz Cheney (R-WY), who each drew two percent of the participants’ support. Former Secretary of State Mike Pompeo and Govs. Greg Abbott (R-TX), Kristi Noem (R-SD), and Glenn Youngkin (R-VA) each garnered one percent support.

Of DeSantis supporters, 37 percent say that their second choice is Trump, while 15 percent would back Pence if the Florida governor does not run, according to the poll. Cruz picks up 11 percent of DeSantis’s supporters in that scenario, while 9 percent move to Haley. Similarly, the second choice among 43 percent of Trump backers is DeSantis, while 18 percent say they would vote for Pence if Trump were not in the race. Another nine percent would back Cruz, and three percent would support Haley.

In the poll focusing on the 2024 GOP primary, Morning Consult sampled 4,125 potential primary voters from December 9-11. It has a margin of error of plus or minus two percent.

If you do the head to head matchup though, then DeSantis wins.

Apples and oranges. Those earlier polls were head to head matchups. If you throw in a bunch of also rans then yes, that weakens DeSantis’ support. But there is something else going on since Trump got almost 50%. Probably it’s because this poll looks at potential primary voters. Voting in the primaries is usually very sparse. The vast number of potential voters will not vote at all.

My belief is that most people believe whatever polls tend to reflect their worldview, as most people lack the intellectual introspection and maturity to accept anything else.

Maybe there was no swing but merely Rupert Murdoch’s polling outfit manufacturing a fake poll.

Yes. Trumps stump speech in 2016 was “What do you have to lose?” He can’t use that in 2024.

And the Dems are not going to nominate Hillary either. More likely they will nominate a young go getter. Even Biden will not be the nominee.

The most humorous part of this poll is Cheney 2%. Maybe the respondents think it’s Dick Cheney who will be running.

I’ve never seen a poll this far out that meant anything.

And the Dems are not going to nominate Hillary either.

Hillary was that unpopular. So Trump was able to win PA and MI.

“Trump is a loser. He’s no longer a winner. Main part of appeal is that he was a winner his whole life.”

********************

Wrong,

Trump has had adversity in his business dealings during his whole life.
What makes the 45th President ‘special’ is the fact that he is a ‘grinder’ who never gives up.

He’s like those Red Sox & Yankee hitters in baseball in the early 2000’s.

foul ball
foul ball
2 run double
walk
single
foul ball
foul ball
3 run homer

The political demise of President Trump is a little bit premature.

In terms of what the MSM reports in vote totals, WHO CARES?

Good point. Except the Democrats are bringing in Marinao Rivera to close the game. Newt is right. We've been underestimating Joe Biden the entire time. That needs to stop. Joe keeps punching in the boxing ring. And we have not been able to stop him so far. So Joe wins and he continues to knock out his opponents.

HUZZAH, HOORAY, BRAVO AND THANKS FOR THINKING THINGS THROUGH.

President Trump, as far as the eye can see, is the ONE PERSON WHO SEEMS TO PUT AMERICA FIRST.

I have got to LOVE that.

*******

Minority Republican,

Good take. Its a take I can’t disagree with.

Biden during the 2020 democrat primaries was completely underestimated, but he was the only one that had a chance of defeating Trump.

The democrats were smart & played realpolitik.

Lol… a prez who locked us down, masked, green lighted mail in ballots and a vax for big pharma, a bumpstock ban.. is polling better than a man whose record is freedom?
Freedom has lost meaning or something. Trump gave the dems endless spending and ushered in a new America. More of that, huh? Just wow. Did I forget his Syrian immigration. Basically the left led him by the nose and he carried their water. Insanity to want a leader with that record.
So either he was too incompetent to know better or he was complicit in this power grab that has erased basic freedoms at increased government control.

You called?

Here's the thing: Universal name recognition.

Trump has it. In fact, he's probably got more universal name recognition than any other politician in the world. DeSantis doesn't have it but he's slowly getting it.

And yet Trump is sliding in the polls. Remember, Trump used to lead these '24 primary polls by 30 points! And in every poll, not just some of them.

That's bad. There is no, "Once people get to know Donald Trump, things will improve."

Everyone already knows Donald Trump. And, aside from the faithful diehards, they're moving away from him.

I'm telling ya'. It's time to ditch this guy. The tide is turning.

DeSantis, on the flip side, has nowhere to go but up. He's not staying in the spotlight. He's quietly doing his job.

Trump will make his "Special Announcement" later today and guess what? Next week he'll be even lower in the polls because every time Trump gets in the news, and he can't help himself, he's gotta be in the news, he reminds a majority of the voters why they just don't like him.

These polls — ALL of them — this one that has Trump ahead of DeSantis, your favorite polls that have it the other way ‘round —

are GARBAGE.

All of them. Incredible garbage.

They’ll be garbage in December of 2023, they’ll be significantly unreliable in May of 2024, they’ll suck in October of 2024. The worthlessness of polls isn’t a bug, it’s a feature baked into the process. The only purpose of polls, especially at this stage, is as a deep state weapon wielded against those of us who want to make America all she can and should be.

Meanwhile, screw the polls, here are the facts:

ONE and ONLY ONE (R) candidate, proven conservative leader President Donald Trump, has announced his candidacy for POTUS ‘24.

Oh, and the guy you’re campaigning for — Joe “Depends” Brandon — is also likely to run.

I despise Joe Biden. I despise anyone who campaigns for him. That’s YOU, whether you realize it or not, whether you admit it or not. You’re joyfully fomenting division and confusion at a time when we need unity and clarity if we ever want to take this country back from the demonic forces that have hijacked it.

I don’t have anything against GOVERNOR Ron DeSantis. But what the hell are you going to do if he doesn’t run for POTUS? Write his name in? And THAT IS THE CURRENT REALITY; the fact that your magic thinking collides with that reality is irrelevant.

The same day, Breitbart published a WSJ poll that showed DeSantis ahead by 14.

Polls are bullshit.

We don’t have free and fair elections in this country anymore.

Until that changes, it doesn’t matter who runs.

Even Trump.

As for DeSantis, WTH hasn’t he secured Florida’s elections?!
