THE REAL MEANING OF PEACE

There once was a King who offered a prize to the artist who would paint the best picture of peace. Many artists tried. The King looked at all the pictures, but there were only two he really liked and he had to choose between them.

One picture was of a calm lake. The lake was a perfect mirror for the peaceful towering mountains all around. Overhead was a blue sky with fluffy white clouds. All who saw this picture thought that it was a perfect picture of peace.

The other picture had mountains too. But these were rugged and bare. Above was an angry sky from which rain fell, and in which lightning played. Down the side of the mountain tumbled a foaming waterfall.

This did not look peaceful at all. But when the King looked, he saw behind the waterfall a tiny bush growing in a crack in the rock. In the bush a mother bird had built her nest. There, in the midst of the rush of angry water, sat the mother bird on her nest ...perfect peace.

Which picture do you think won the prize? The King chose the second picture. Do you know why? "Because," explained the King, "peace does not mean to be in a place where there is no noise, trouble, or hard work. Peace means to be in the midst of all those things and still be calm in your heart. That is the real meaning of peace."

Clinging to What’s Good
Read: Romans 12:9–13

Love must be sincere. Hate what is evil; cling to what is good. Romans 12:9

When we park our car near an open field and walk across it to get to our house, we almost always get some sticky cockleburs on our clothes—especially in the fall. These tiny “hitchhikers” attach to clothing, shoes, or whatever is passing by and ride to their next destination. It’s nature’s way of spreading cocklebur seeds in my local field and around the world.

As I try to carefully remove clinging cockleburs, I’ve often thought about the message that admonishes believers in Jesus to “cling to what is good” (Romans 12:9). When we’re trying to love others, it can be challenging. However, as the Holy Spirit helps us hold on to what’s good with all we have, we can repel evil and be “sincere” in our love as He guides us (v. 9).

Cocklebur seeds don’t fall off with a mere brush of the hand, they hang on to you. And when we focus on what’s good, keeping our mind on God’s mercy, compassion, and commands, we too—in His strength—can hang on tightly to those we love. He helps us stay “devoted to one another in love,” remembering to place other’s needs before our own (v. 10).

Yes, those cockleburs can be challenging, but they also remind me to cling to others in love and by God’s power to grip tightly “what is good” (v. 9; see also Philippians 4:8–9).Katara Patton

How can clinging to what’s good help you love a challenging friend or family member? How is sincere love also a tenacious love?

Remind me to cling with all my might to what’s good, Jesus. I desire to reflect Your love to others.

Good evening, TigerHawk, and Shavuah Tov to you and yours.

So true...the 10 Commandments were NOT suggestions.

How is winter treating you? Tuesday/Wednesday we had a huge storm...more than 2 feet in my driveway. So much at one time for us.

I am so thankful that my heat problem was fixed. You still nice and warm after your heat issue got fixed?

So true - Peace.

Jesus said to his Deciples....

“Peace I leave with you, MY PEACE I give unto you: not as the world giveth, give I unto you”

John 14

Only His Peace keeps us calm in the height of the storms of life.

Hello there Kathy.....blessings to you and yours as well.

Yes Winters arrived but mostly just cold temps...we've hardly had any snow as it stays above us pretty much. However often the jet stream wobbles thru here so we really never know what we're going to get. So far very little this winter.

We missed all the Great Lake snow that hit back aways, just by a hair. It's early yet so no doubt we'll get out share along the way.

I hibernate in winter quite a bit. Snugly blankets and soups simmering on the stove. Baking bread and cookies now and then. Lots of movies and videos. Just the way I like it this time of year.

YEAH! Snug bug rug, all that stuff. Got fuel oil last week. Only cost me my left arm up to the elbow...but there’s yet more winter to come.

One day you’ll have to explain to me the attractions and virtues of Alaska that makes it worth the climate...of course, NYS has Buffalo, and it’s annual and famous “LAKE EFFECT” snow...no one’s ever explained to me why folks live with either.

I think the bears have it right...wake up in the spring, hungry, but without any lingering depression.

Still, Winter hasn’t even officially started yet, so we still have lots of chances to get snowed in real good around here. It’s happened before...the worst are usually Spring’ish Nor’easters...usually...but mileage varies.

Tahiti looks more attractive as each day passes.

Howdy, Kathy.

I see the beginnings of your next snowstorm have arrived, at least out by the airports. A little spitting snow at the moment but oh boy, what’s moving up from Bristol Bay!
