The title is false. The decree does not ban “Orthodox Christianity”. There is the Orthodox Chrurch of Ukraine which like the Orthodox Chrurch of Russia is part of the eastern Orthodox churches. The ban came about from the Russian Orthodox Church acting as a stooge of Putin and putting “Russian nationality” to the forefront of its positions, by the statements of its leaders. That has divisive and separatist implications in war torn Ukraine.
Misleading headline. There are two major Orthodox denominations in Ukraine. The Ukrainian Orthodox Church is under the Patriarch of Moscow. His name is Kirill and he is tight with Putin and a big fan of the war. It alone was outlawed. The other Orthodox denomination is the Orthodox Church of Ukraine. It is under the Patriarch of Kiev. It was not outlawed. So, this move by Zelensky was a political move, not primarily an anti- religious move. He certainly didn’t “outlaw Orthodox Christianity”. OFGS! Quit with the hyperbole. He is not outlawing Orthodox Christianity, he is closing down ONE of its many branches; specifically, the RUSSIAN Orthodox Church, which is basically an arm of the Russian government. Ukraine is at war with Russia, after all.
The actual Ukrainian Orthodox church is not affected by the law at all, except that they may get to administer religious activities at places where the Russian dominated Orthodox church was in control previously.
