Store closures have become an all-too-common occurrence since the pandemic started. Even major retail chains like Walmart and Bed Bath & Beyond have had to shutter several stores across the U.S. over the past three years, though some cuts have been much more dramatic than others.
At the same time, two of the biggest pharmacy chains in the country have also been closing locations this year. Walgreens and CVS have faced several temporary and permanent pharmacy shutdowns this year, and more locations are closing their doors.
Read on to find out why these two drugstores are cutting back on pharmacy availability, and how it could affect your prescriptions.

Maybe their mutual business model of always located their stores on adjacent or opposite corners of the same intersections is the problem.
It’s the exact opposite of a pharmacy desert. It’s direct competition for every one of your locations.
Similar to me - I get mine at Kroger, which is closer than CVS anyways.
My Staples store for over 20 years closed went to get a few things and bam its empty was just there a few weeks ago went to the second one a bit further away bam its gone too
Here is a weird fact... there are CVS stores that closed down in my city. Just down the street however, they just built a brand new CVS from the ground up. What is going on???
Looks like Cigna made the right decision in acquiring Express Scripts. Chinese chemicals delivered straight to your door.
There’s always a line when I purchase my prescriptions at CVS. Also, Walgreens always builds a store right across, or next door, to a CVS store. Will have to take note which company closes down, if they do, in my hood.
I’ve been in and out of the local Dollar General several times without seeing an employee. Grab stuff, scan stuff, swipe card, walk out the door with purchase. There’s about 50 cameras up on the rafters at the front of the store and one right in your face at self checkout.
Our vet has cut back hours due to staffing shortages.
24 hour Walgreens near me stopped that during Scamdemic. Never gone back. At least they’re open on Sundays again.
Walgreens is a useless piece of crap. They should do us a favor and jump off a cliff.
I don’t know about CVS.
Me too. After the Democrats got their Antifa/BLM thugs to attack local stores in 2020 the local CVS revamped theirs. Only one fat F* teller now and he spends all of his time on the phone. I quit going entirely.
I will not work for the retailer in addition to giving them my money.
That makes sense.
It’s easy to see how the whole pharmacy process will be automated.
Too many people suffer from normalcy bias. They assume since something has always been, it will always continue to be. Many are ignoring the fact that many items they used see on the grocery shelves are gone and will not be coming back, ever. People assume that closings are temporary, and things will return to “normal” soon. Since the media is ignoring it or covering up the number of corporations which have announced lay-offs, people do not realize that their own job is in jeopardy.
I’m afraid some people are going to be surprised and shocked when reality hits and media can no longer cover up exactly how bad things suddenly are.
Dentists having hard time staffing up too.
I know what you mean. Longs just hasn’t been the same since CVS took over. My favorite branch closed in June.
Walgreens was roundly criticized for closing outlets that were being looted and robbed blind in dimrat paradise cities.
“How dare they deprive entire neighbor-hoods of the right to shop...........lift.”
BINGO! This is all about LOSS PREVENTION. You can steal up to $1,000.00 and not be prosecuted in CA.
So, if 1000 people shoplift $999.99 worth of stuff, the store loses $999,990..........................
We had to wait a month for vet surgery (ACL) for our dog.
A couple of years ago it would have been just a day or two wait.
Things are getting worse in thousands of little ways.
