The pandemic transformed the landscape of K-12 education. Some parents withdrew their kids from public school and placed them into private or home schools. Their reasons varied: Many preferred private schools that offered in-person instruction; others distrusted public schools’ pandemic precautions.
It’s not clear whether those trends will stick, and the factors are complex. So far, data show that since 2019, private enrollment is up, public enrollment is down and home schooling has become more popular. Families flocked to private and home schools at the greatest rate in a decade, according to American Community Survey estimates from the U.S. Census. The government projects that K-12 public school enrollment — already facing demographic pressures — will drop further to about 46 million students by fall 2030...
The Washington Post Magazine asked parents why they chose private or home schooling, and what the right to control their child’s education means to them....

Jen Read, 44, Hillsborough, N.C.
We had never considered private school until this past winter when omicron was so rampant. Private schools had more outdoor time, more kids and staff masking indoors, and highly vaccinated communities (for the most part), which was very important to us, as we work in public health research and are very concerned about long covid and new variants emerging due to continued community transmission.
We never thought we would be paying for private school. We’re doing this at the expense of saving for college and retirement. We believe in the public school system, and it was heartbreaking to leave it. We are taking it year by year and not looking long-term at this point. In addition to covid concerns, our district has had some extreme voices, including parents who want to ban books, anti-LGBTQ rhetoric among parents, and some questionable school board members.

But....Gee....I'm STILL perplexed as to why this is happening...what could it POSSIBLY be?
Fleeing means large percentages are leaving, and that simply is not true. It’s a trickle and we need to offer parents alternatives like what was done in AZ.
The Liberal Teachers Union is responsible and is a detriment to students.
I think Jen Reed is a fake. Private schools are full. But its because of republicans, not democrats.
Because they not only miseducate the children until they become utterly spasmatic nonfunctional adults, but they also effectively sterilize them by either convincing them they are gay or transgender in which case they end up not breeding
This is a significant article because the Compost is admitting for the first time that people are fleeing public crap.
Just think of all the money the teachers’ unions are missing out on when those students leave!
This must not stand!
Prog Socialists, Communists, Pedophiles, Violent Criminal Gangs, Homos and Trannys!
And no other education whatsoever.
Fleeing because democracy.
And many don't like having their kids indoctrinated into queerdom and perversion or having the school staff convince Johnny that he's a girl and should have his penis cut off..
Seems to me, to be a pretty stupid question. Schools are indoctrination centers for the hard left, they “graduate” kids that can’t read past the third grade level, don’t understand basic math, know NO real history, but yet have the self esteem of an elite.
The schools are failing us. They promote not only ignorance, but push out a group of kids that have been indoctrinated in the ways of gloBULL warming, freedom-hating, anti-business, anti-American drones that can’t even figure out what gender is.
Smart parents pull their kids out of that nonsense. It’s time for taxpayers to stop supporting it, but that is difficult as taxpayers have almost NO say in how the tax dollars are spent these days.
IDK, could be the hate-whitey wokeness, the letter people, the feminists, or those perpetually afraid of everything who demand a “safe space” where they can be free from offending ideas. Public schools were set up to provide business with compliant workers, not great thinkers.
Public schools have switched from offering education to offering lies, perversion, murder and treason (IOW, how to be a Demonicrat).
Yea. It is interesting who wasn’t interviewed. No parents from DC’s pathetic public school system were interviewed. Scholastic achievement is practically zero. WaPo didn’t want to expose the dangerous school environment where little to no teaching is actually going on. None of the parents expressed worry about CRT and gender identity brainwashing. None of the interviewees expressed worry about teacher unions who tell parents it’s none of their business about what’s being taught. Most of the parents were framed as religious nuts.
Our side is not organized. Otherwise we could "take over" school boards and elect governors that would reform schools and election laws etc.
This article proves that ALL liberals are stupid and attract other stupid people and they’re numbers are growing.
The article states: " So far, data show that since 2019, private enrollment is up, public enrollment is down and home schooling has become more popular."
You assessment is true. The narrative indicates a trend but there is no quantification.
Statistically, an event occurring once is an anomaly. Twice may be a coincidence, Three times is a trend. When an event occurs thousands of times it says you are doing something wrong. Where are we on that scale?
If the parents want to use home-schooling to “socialize” their kids they should hire some thugs to visit and steal their kids’ lunch money...
;-)
Why?
Because the head of the teacher’s union is a commie?
Because ‘pride day’ isn’t enough for the groomers and soon it’ll be “S&M Pride Day - the Joys of Torturing Animals” for 7 year olds?
Because kids going to college are put in remedial classes because they can’t read past a 6th grade level?
Because black democrat ‘teachers’ hate white parents and take that hatred out on white children?e
Because School Boards called in FBI and Homeland goons to intimidate parents who objected to sexual weirdo teachers grooming their kids with sexually explicit books?
A real charter school entrepreneur with his schools pledging to parents that the curriculum will not have one ounce of Woke in it and not discuss social issues in class and stick strictly to the academics of readin’ writin’ and rithmatic’ would definitely be filling a market need and stand a good chance of taking massive amounts of business from public schools
