~The FReeper Canteen Presents~

Road Trip: Dyess Air Force Base, Texas

TXdyessafb1

Dyess Air Force Base is a United States Air Force (USAF) base located about 7 miles southwest of downtown Abilene, Texas, and 150 miles west of Fort Worth, Texas.

The host unit at Dyess is the 7th Bomb Wing assigned to the Global Strike Command Eighth Air Force. The wing is one of only two B-1B Lancer strategic bomber wings in the USAF, the other being the 28th Bomb Wing at Ellsworth Air Force Base, South Dakota.

The 317th Airlift Wing, assigned to Air Mobility Command Eighteenth Air Force, is a tenant unit and one of four world-wide active-duty locations for the C-130 Hercules military transport aircraft.

The 317th Airlift Group moved from Pope AFB, North Carolina to Dyess AFB on April 1, 1997. Made up of the 39th and 40th Airlift Squadrons, 317th Operations Support Squadron, 317th Aircraft Maintenance Squadron, 317th Maintenance Squadron and the 317th Maintenance Operations Squadron, the group is in the process of converting from 33 1970 era C-130H aircraft to 28 new C-130J-30 stretch version Super Hercules transport aircraft.

TXdyessafb4

The 436th Training Squadron provides formal training to Air Combat Command using 15 schools at Dyess and 38 other programs exported directly to units for local training needs.

Training includes command and control, air, ground and weapons safety, Air Force Operations Resource Management System, classroom instructor training, Air Force Mission Support System administration, mission planning cell training, life support and survival, and computer software use and development.

The 436th Training Squadron also develops multimedia and formal presentations used in training program development and formal presentations. Multimedia personnel are based at Dyess, and deploy worldwide to perform their mission. Unit products and services are used throughout the DOD.

TXdyessafb3

The B-21 is a long-range, highly survivable, penetrating strike stealth bomber that will incrementally replace the B-1 and B-2 bombers, becoming the backbone of the U.S. Air Force bomber fleet.

50 years of advances and low observable technology have gone into this aircraft and even the most sophisticated air defense systems will struggle to detect the B-21 in the sky.

The B-21 is a sixth-generation state of the art bomber that will come to Dyess Air Force Base. It’s a big economic boost for the Abilene economy, bringing a lot of construction and a lot of people and keeping our nation safe from right here in Abilene Texas.

Great Expectations
Read: Luke 2:25–32, 36–38

She . . . spoke about the child to all who were looking forward to the redemption of Jerusalem. Luke 2:38

On a busy day before Christmas, an aged woman approached the mail counter at my crowded neighborhood post office. Watching her slow pace, the patient postal clerk greeted her, “Well hello, young lady!” His words were friendly, but some might hear them saying that “younger” is better.

The Bible inspires us to see that advanced age can motivate our hope. As the infant Jesus is brought to the temple by Joseph and Mary, to be consecrated (Luke 2:23; see Exodus 13:2, 12), two elderly believers suddenly take center stage.

First, Simeon—who’d been waiting for years to see the Messiah—“took [Jesus] in his arms and praised God, saying: ‘Sovereign Lord, as you have promised, you may now dismiss your servant in peace. For my eyes have seen your salvation, which you have prepared in the sight of all nations’ ” (Luke 2:28–31).

Then Anna, a “very old” prophet (v. 36), came along just as Simeon was talking with Mary and Joseph. A widow who’d been married only seven years, she’d lived in the temple to age eighty-four. Never leaving, she “worshiped night and day, fasting and praying.” When she saw Jesus, she began praising God, explaining about “the child to all who were looking forward to the redemption of Jerusalem” (vv. 37–38).

These two hopeful servants remind us to never stop waiting on God—no matter our age—with great expectations. Patricia Raybon

What lessons have you learned from elderly believers about God’s faithfulness? How does their hopefulness inspire you?

Dear faithful Father, when I lose hope, remind me to wait expectantly for You.

Thanks for the ROAD TRIP. Watched the live roll out of the B-21 “Raider” last week. Looks like a MANTA RAY that really means business!

Good evening, lightman...is winter easing in? Has your stove been put to work yet?

About 4” of snow on my deck so far today. I’m glad because zero and minus temps are coming and we need the cover so the pipes don’t freeze.

Stove had a brief run last month but SHOULD have been used Saturday night through this morning....20.5˚ which means the heat pump was absolutely inefficient.

The low was a “surprise”...forecast was for around 25.

20hp tractor has been converted to snowthrower mode...the blade tractor is a quick enough job that. can wait until serious snow is in the forecast, which won’t be for at least another fortnight.

Howdy, Kathy.

Nice to see it snowing most of the day up there. It looks like a decent amount, judging by the tire tracks in parking lots. I hope it keeps snowing a while to thicken that blanket on the ground.

I've seen many B-1 bombers and other aircraft taking off and/or landing at Dyess AFB while driving down I-20 on my way to Ft. Worth or Bryan/College Station. I've never actually been on the base, though. Never had a reason to. Thanks for the stream, Lauren!
