Switzerland is considering banning electric vehicles for non-essential travel this winter as the continent deals with an energy crisis sparked by Russia’s war in Ukraine.
The Telegraph reported that government officials have already drafted plans to conserve energy that could include limiting heat in buildings to no more than 68 degrees Fahrenheit and reducing the number of hours stores can be open.
Stricter measures could be enacted, including banning large indoor gatherings like sporting events, concerts, and theatre events, the report said.
Switzerland relies heavily on hydroelectric power, which constitutes nearly two-thirds of its energy supply, the excess of which it exports during the time of year that it can generate the most electricity from rain and snowfall, the report said. It then typically is forced to import energy during the rest of the year as its nuclear resources, which it has been working to phase out, and its fossil fuel resources are not enough to meet demand.
The country has created a two-tier system for dealing with the energy shortage: emergency and crisis.
When in the “emergency” tier, there are three levels of restrictions, and in the “crisis” tier, there are two levels.
Electric vehicles would face restrictions in the third level of the emergency tier.

Welcome to your future as an EV owner.
LOL!
Let’s fight ‘fossil fuels’ and at the same time ban driving EVs!!!
Completely deliberate and avoidable.
First of all, most people can’t afford to buy an EV
Now they may not be allowed to drive them
But Government still demands that by 2035, all auto sales will be EV
got that?
And like good little lemmings they will obey and say nothing.
Quick, more windmills!
The grim future of humanity — to be governed by lunatics and perverts.
Yep.
I'd bet that if you polled the Krauts, 90% would believe that the energy crisis was Putin's fault.
(I wonder what that percentage would be among Freepers?)
so EVs are a waste of energy
Check any Ukraine thread, and a good number of them self identify. The question then becomes is the count accurate--how many are multiple handles from the same person, and how many are coming from a farm sponsored out of McLean or Langley?
Oh they’re educated alright.
“by the uneducated environmental policies of the government”
Yes, it’s as simple as that. The idiots in government were swayed by the know-nothing greens that we could overnight transform an energy infrastructure that took 150 years to build and optimize to deliver cheap, reliable and clean energy.
I worked in the power industry for 35 years starting 1973. We prided ourselves on building huge, highly efficient, reliable power plants that delivered economical electricity. You cannot say “Whoops, we chose the wrong power sources. Let’s change to wind, solar and batteries.” and make the change overnight.
We are “governed” by incredibly stupid people, here and in the EU. I mean, really stupid, low-IQ people.
Are you one of them thar “Putin Bots”?
< ;^ )
It wasn't too long ago that we had horrible gasoline shortages (thus it was good to have an EV). Now there are places with horrible electricity shortages (thus it is good to have an ICE car). If that kind of 3rd world lifestyle comes to Alabama, my wife and I would at least have 2 energy sources to choose from for most of our driving. If gas is hard to come by we'll depend more on our EV car. If power is hard to come by we'll depend more on our ICE pickup.
Of course, in our case by "power is hard to come by" we mean beyond what our solar provides for us (which happens somewhat with us having to buy about 10% to 15% of all the power we consume, including charging the EV for local driving). But even if you don't live in a good situation that's good for solar, an argument could be made that having an EV as part of your two-car fleet gives some flexibility on which energy source you lean on for mobility.
Communism fails because while they are great at redistributing wealth, they have no idea how to produce anything.
Environmentalism fails because while they are great at banning things, they have no idea how to replace that which was banned.
Does that kill switch in new cars make sense now?
