Chuck Todd: I Think Steve Scalise Will End Up Being Speaker
breitbart.com ^ | 12/4/22 | PAM KEY

NBC host Chuck Todd said Sunday on KNBC’s “Today in LA Weekend” that he believed Rep. Steve Scalise (R-LA) would end up being the Speaker of the House.

Anchor Conan Nolan asked, “We have a Southern California in the leadership of the Democratic Party on the House, Pete Aguilar from San Bernardino. The other House member with clout is Kevin McCarthy. Do you believe he’s going to be the next speaker?”

Todd said, “I don’t know. I have to say I wouldn’t put my house payment on it. I wouldn’t put my mortgage on it. I think he’s going to have a tough time. How many never-McCarthys are there? And I think this group of never-McCarthys in the House Republican conference, I don’t think they, whatever their issues, I think they want to prove that they can deny a speakership to somebody and then move on to the next person. Like, I don’t. And the people that are comfortable with McCarthy being the leader, they don’t love him. They’re just tolerant of him. So, you know, I think this is going to end up somehow being Steve Scalise at the end of the day because I think he’s the guy that can bridge these divides a little bit easier. He garners quite a bit of respect inside the conference. You know, his recovery from being shot at the baseball field sort of gave him a little more standing inside the conference. His ability to sort of come back from that. It just, you know, I don’t know what McCarthy can do to buy off these last few never-McCarthys. I don’t.”

I've been saying this as well. I think if McCarthy doesn't get enough support in the first or second round vote, then the caucus could coalesce around Scalise.

I believe there are other plans for Scalise in the works. McCarthy will take it and I really have no problem with him. Some of you folks are looking for some non-existent person for the job.

The problem is the Republican caucus. McCarthy is just a symptom of a much bigger issue.

"McCarthy will take it and I really have no problem with him." Well this is the problem with him. He'll be more of the same. And we need SOMEBODY ELSE. And for that to happen he needs to lose the first couple of ballots so he FINALLY gets it and steps aside so SOMEBODY ELSE can be Speaker. "

I agree that Scalise is the favorite to become Speaker if McCarthy fails but I don’t think he’s any better than McCarthy.

I seem to recall that when Scalise became the house majority whip in 2014, he fired the most conservative staffers.

Regardless, McCarthy needs to go. He’s toxic.

Scalise would be great choice but to be fair, Chuck Todd has never been right about anything he’s evr predicted.

I’d rather have Andy Biggs or Jim Jordan. Nothing against Scalise, but I don’t think he’s aggressive enough.

“I really have no problem with him”

Is why the Republican Party is dead. Stands for nothing other the Democrats. Good luck Rino.

I believe his views may have changed after a Bernie Sanders volunteer caused a rather big kerfuffle on June 14, 2017...Ron DeSantis was there that day as well.

Look it up.

Who will support an American First agenda with realistic solutions that everyone might agree?

Scalise is a squish, too.

We need a younger, bolder patriot.

Jim Jordan would be a good one. At least, based on his voting record.

“Jim Jordan would be a good one.”

Yes. He’s not too deeply entrenched in the GOPe group. I think he’s one of the few who have been trying to help the J6 POWs, along with Gohmert, MTG, Gaetz. All others in the House have ignored these people.
