Rubio says he won’t vote for any deal that lacks support of rail workers
The Hill ^ | 11/29/2022 | Julia Mueller

Amid pressure on Congress to pass a bill that would avert a rail shutdown, Sen. Marco Rubio (R-Fla.) said Tuesday that he won’t back any deal that lacks support from rail workers.

“Just because Congress has the authority to impose a heavy-handed solution does not mean we should. It is wrong for the Biden Administration, which has failed to fight for workers, to ask Congress to impose a deal the workers themselves have rejected. I will not vote for any deal that does not have the support of the rail workers,” Rubio said in a statement.

Joe already agreed to a 25% pay increase. But they still don’t like the terms.

The Railworkers in question are big Labor unionists.

Biden is Big Labor personified. The Congress will vote as they are directed by their money providing union bosses

“Have complex freight railroads run entirely by dumb computers and “AI”. What could POSSIBLY go WRONG???”
Don’t ever fly in a modern aircraft if you believe that, eg
every Third landing of a British airways B777 is by computer.
I help certify those systems and they work, if you do it right.

I never said de-man the train. one guy is good enough. when manual intervention is required and the repair crews are an hours or so out.

And I fly the B777. You leave out everything that has to be done by the pilots to set it up for the auto land, none of which can be done remotely. The 777 auto lands great but it has to be set up perfectly, closely monitored, and you never take your hands off the controls during the maneuver. The “if you do it right” part is kinda critical because if you don’t do it right a bunch of people die. The first time a pilotless plane crashes into a neighborhood on final to LAX it’ll put an end to that idea for the next 50 years, just like the first self driving train that plows into a school bus full of children.

Where I worked, we had 6 paid sick/personal days. The first week of every year the company cut us a check for the 6 days. If you used a sick day during the rest of the year you just didn’t get paid that day or days. It really cut down on random absenteeism.

Yes it has a lot of prep work. but highly skilled people aren’t needed to do it.
I can do it and I’m not a pilot. They call it a check list.
Trains are on rails. they don’t stop on a “dime” or avoid problems not like ships, aircraft, or cars.
they go forward or backwards and that is it, unless a disaster strikes. Never met a man that stopped a de-railment.

The railroads will be lucky to have any workers in 25 years.

The average age is 45. Plus the number in the 20 to 30 year old range is so low its unsustainable.

Plus the management of these railroads is atrocious. They’re run by shitheads who can’t retain employees, but are good burning through them.

Perhaps we can offshore are rail system to Asia.(Sarcasm)

Why are Republicans touching this with a ten foot pole?

“Why are Republicans touching this with a ten foot pole?”

Because they’re stupid people.

Also railroad management wants them to “do something” to avoid a strike.

You have no clue. You might be an A&P who can certify the auto land system in a plane sitting on the ramp or in a simulator but that’s a far cry from doing it in the air dodging weather and other airplanes while a Chinese controller is trying to communicate with you. The first time you tried you’d have it upside down. There’s a lot more to safely flying an airplane than just the mechanics of a landing.

I agree but that doesn’t mean the Rail Companies won’t try it and eventually implement AI and Automation, even if multiple accidents happen, they will probably get some type of immunity.

Amazon is another company looking to automate everything, in the next few years look for them to automate their warehouses, especially since their workers are seeking to unionize and demand better pay and working conditions.

I think Rubio’s tactic of backing the “workers” against the union bosses, owners and the Dims is very creative, and should be pushed by all Republicans.

It won’t work, but “optics” count.

This sounds like the best solution to recommend for the rail companies and their workers. There are many ways to ship objects: rail, ocean ship, river boat, truck, drones, helicopter, airplane, ICBM (with parachutes), Uber Eats, etc.

What is not needed is a bigger bureaucracy in a swamp meddling in more things and getting even more pathetically incompetent than ever. Asking people in DC to solve problems is like asking a morbidly obese person to go eat at an all-you-can-eat donuts buffet as the way to work on their weight under the theory that the root cause of their obesity is that they simply aren’t getting enough to eat.

This exact issue, three generations back, is what made my Grandmother a broken glass republican. Roosevelt was hammering the rail unions and Republican congress said it was unfair for FDR to fight only on behalf of the Railroads. My little Granny hated the her husband lost his railroad job during the turmoil and for the last 86 years my family has voted Republican.

My grandmother was 4'11 and like Little Abner's mom in temperament but good looking.

“How about you let the rail companies negotiate with the rail workers and CONGRESS stay out of it”

That would be the proper position but the rail owners prefer the leverage of government power. It gives them a healthy advantage over labor.

Did you know Congress can write a new contract if it wanted to?

No arguments about that.
But a Train is very different.
If I can mostly automate a plane, a train is simple.
