Netherlands to close up to 3,000 farms to comply with EU rules
The Telegraph ^ | November 28, 2022 | James Crisp

The Dutch government plans to buy and close down up to 3,000 farms near environmentally sensitive areas to comply with EU nature preservation rules.

The Netherlands is attempting to cut down its nitrogen pollution and will push ahead with compulsory purchases if not enough farms take up the offer voluntarily.

Farmers will be offered a deal “well over” the worth of the farm, according to the government plan that is targeting the closure of 2,000 to 3,000 farms or other major polluting businesses.

Earlier leaked versions of the plan put the figure at 120 per cent of the farm’s value but that figure has not yet been confirmed by ministers.

“There is no better offer coming,” Christianne van der Wal, nitrogen minister, told MPs on Friday. She said compulsory purchases would be made with “pain in the heart”, if necessary.

The Netherlands needs to reduce its emissions to comply with EU conservation rules and agriculture is responsible for almost half the nitrogen emitted in the proud farming nation.

The Dutch environment agency has warned that native species are disappearing faster in the Netherlands than in the rest of Europe and that biodiversity is under threat.

But the new plan looks set to reignite tensions with farmers over nitrogen reduction.

Dutch farmers have staged mass protests, burnt hay bales, dumped manure on highways and picketed ministers' houses over the last three years.

We are taking coffee grounds from local businesses to put in our garden just for the nitrogen value of the grounds. They would end up in a landfill.

Who knew all these liberal coffee shops were such polluters.

Shut them down.

Typical liberal good for thee but not for me thinking.

If they are lucky the President of Serbia spoke recently of some people not making it through the next winter.

Bingo.

Those Trump-hating Republicans that didn’t support his candidates in the mid-terms have helped to reap a harvest of death through “climate policy”.

The people who proclaim the loudest that we should feed the world are the same people trying their best to stop food production.

They are complicit in the building genocide. I can only assume they have a crash pad staked out where they and their families will ride out the hellfire that's coming. And people look to them to be our leaders? Pure clown world.

Vegetables require farming.

I compost everything. I use a five gallon bucket with a cordless drill jiffy mixing blade. I get particular joy in all the junk mail! Best garden soil enrichment ever!

When I was in Japan in the late 80's I got to see their landfill-waste operations. They repurpose everything! The trucks unload garbage into giant vibrating silos. Then the garbage is fed onto conveyor belts. Each section removes assigned material to place on a conveyor going elsewhere. Paper waste, organic matter, plastics, packaging waste, glass, etc...By the time you get to the end of the line there is nothing left to sort. All organic matter goes to composting and animal feed. Each type of garbage gets repurposed.

There are no municipal recycling programs because Everything is recycled.

I had an uncle from Estonia who lived producing virtually zero waste. His gardens, orchards, and systems were amazing. He grew, canned, cured, and stored all their food. No refrigerator. No television. He worked wood and painted for his spare time entertainment. He would collect black suckers every spring when they spawned in creeks. He would fill burlap bags with them. He would dress them like herring filets and pickle them in jars. He usually put up about 200 quart size jars every year. He did all this in an urban city home with a large back property area.
