City Council gets a ‘doomsday presentation’ on sea level rise -- and pledges action

HONOLULU (HawaiiNewsNow) -- The ongoing fight against the effects of climate change took centerstage at the Honolulu City Council on Thursday.

In the past, the council’s Zoning and Planning Committee has drafted bills surrounding coastal erosion and climate change. But lawmakers are now looking at creating comprehensive legislation focused on shoreline development.

In an informational briefing, climate experts offered a presentation showcasing the long-term impact of global warming on coastlines throughout Oahu.

In Ewa Beach, for example, models show wave inundation of 4 feet in the next 70 years.

Dr. Chip Fletcher, interim dean of the University of Hawaii-Manoa School of Ocean and Earth Science and Technology, calls sea level rise “an unstoppable reality.”

“Ultimately, we are looking at a statewide, in fact, a worldwide retreat from the shoreline of significant proportion,” Fletcher said.

Councilmembers say the presentation underscored the urgent need to hone in on solutions and take a proactive approach in adjusting to sea level rise.

“I got a little horrified and scared,” said councilmember Calvin Say. “The presentation was a doomsday presentation for all of us to recognize. Setbacks is one issue, but there are more other issues we have to contend with.”

Kauai and Maui counties already have rules in place based on future coastal erosion models.

Over the next several months and into the new year, the city is planning to gather more feedback from community stakeholders and neighborhood boards throughout Oahu.

The only accurate models they have show the huge profits generated by the inaccurate models.

“I got a little horrified and scared,” said councilmember Calvin Say”

Well, yeah, that’s the whole point.

I remember a documentary showing how the Hawaiian island chains were formed by undersea volcanoes and how, over time the oldest eroded into what are called sea mounts.

And has nothing to do with global warming.

models show

Those models have a tendency to show if every person in the world produced (GDP) and used as much energy as USA citizenship - that is not going to ever happen.

Before George W. Bush was President, there were glaciers in Wisconsin. Now they are all gone. Coincidence? I think not. Follow the science.

However, not building things on sand right next to the ocean is probably a good idea. (And not subsidizing the insurance for these buildings!) This notion seems to be lost on lots of people on the East Coast.

Al Gore was saying this back in the 90’s. None of his predictions came true

That Ice Age has NOT ended!

Technically speaking we are still in an Ice Age. (Ice age is an inaccurate term!).

The geologic age we are in is called the Quaternary - 2.58 million years ago to the present. The Quaternary is an age defined by cyclic continental glaciations (Ice Ages!). The last major glaciation ended say 20,000 years ago. We have been in a warming lull. Yes indeedy it got warmer!! We built civilization. Yay us! During that lull it’s had ups - then the great past civilizations happened, Sumerian, the Classical Age, the Medieval warming Period to name a few; and downs, Bronze age collapse, 6th Century collapse (536 AD year of darkness), Dark Ages, the Little Ice Age (about 1300 to about 1850.)

The cycle will go against us at some point. We didn’t cause it and their nothing we can do to stop it.

For those who don’t believe me! (Yes its Wikipedia but it’s not too bad here!)

Yeah, that’s funny. Wife and I were on a European trip last September and spent a few days in Amsterdam.

Amazing how gullible people are...

There's one resource they'll never run out of to preserve their shoreline.

Higher and deeper.

Research has shown that if ONE person will stand up and speak the truth, others will follow.

We all need to be that person.
