Nov. 17 (UPI) -- New York Gov. Kathy Hochul declared a state of emergency for 11 counties on Thursday, as a historic lake-effect snow event threatens to blanket parts of the state.
Up to five feet of snow are possible in Buffalo and the surrounding areas as a storm system coming from the Great Lakes blankets the western part of the state. Heavy snow is expected to hit the area Thursday evening and continue for up to 48 hours.
Hochul said Thursday that the state and Buffalo are prepared for the brunt of the storm.
She urged locals to stay off the roads as visibility "will be next to zero" and said schools will be closed. She said locals are also encouraged to work remotely and stay home if possible.
According to NBC News, New York State Police said commercial vehicle bans will go into effect at 4 p.m. Thursday in western New York on various roads, including the full length of Interstate 290, Interstate 990, Route 33 and Route 400.
Snowfall rates in this week's event could increase to 1 to 3 inches an hour starting Thursday evening into Friday, accompanied by thunder snow. The lake-effect snow will continue for areas downwind of the lakes into Sunday.
Also on Thursday, the NFL decided to move the Buffalo Bills home game against the Cleveland Browns to Detroit.

5 feet of snow? That makes me homesick for Michigan. I grew up in Detroit. I shoveled up and salted down many a sidewalk. The air had a distinct winter smell. Fresh and airid
One almost wishes for overnight universal re-glaciation...anything to shut these global warming bastards up.
[Up to five feet of snow are possible in Buffalo]
Darn you, Global Warming or something
My son is in Rochester NY, 75 miles east of Buffalo. Rochester is only forecasted to get 1”.
That’s crazy!!!.
Apparently the lake effect snow dumps really quick when the air gets off of the lake. So Buffalo gets buried. And by the time it gets to Rochester, the winds are whipping the moisture stream North and South, so that The remaining snow gets scattered over a much larger area.
It was crazy in Ashtabula County yesterday morning. Sheriff declared a level 3 Snow emergency. Literally means you get arrested for being on the roads.
Highway reports said there was up to 7.5 inches of ice on the freeway!!!
I live 30 miles east of the events, we had ice roads, but not the snow.
Level 3 snow emergency downgraded to level 1 in Ashtabula County: What the sheriff wants you to know

Chicago had the biggest snow dump it’s ever had when I was in grade school.
BEST WINTER EVER!!!!
The kids in the neighborhood had a blast! (Parents not so much.)
I remember that snowfall in Chicago. There were mountains of snow from the street in front of the houses. Two stories tall. First time we all ever went sledding we used cut up cardboard boxes.
i’m close by...near the lake...a dusting...and it’s almost dawn....and it’s not snowing.
Wear your masks......
I was thinking the same thing. 😆🤪
5 feet??! I dont not believe this for one second. if they have shown us anything over the past few years it’s the need to Extreme the news. and “5 Feet” is now evidence they have lost control of the acceptable boundries of extremism...
I used to live on the highest hill off the lake. Having the house be buried was not uncommon.
Good, Lord! My wife grew up in Hawaii and has never seen snow, except a light dusting now and then when we’ve driven up to Tahoe from Calif. But she almost desperately wants to see a real snowstorm, at least once in her life, and I’ve been trying to figure out how to help her realize her dream.
I’ve considered a short trip to Buffalo in the past, but this storm would be TOO MUCH, lol. Don’t want to get stuck somewhere for a week or two. And I don’t want to EVER shovel another shovelfull of snow in my life! I’m convinced that’s how I got my bad back in the first place.
Why is an annual event an “emergency”?
all i’m hearing this morning is....climate warming...lakes warmer than usual...blah...blah....blah...
I am so glad to be rid of Upstate New York.
I am in Buffalo. There is no disaster. It is a typical lake effect storm. We have one or two a year, and are quite used to it. 1977 was a unique event, but even that was easily survivable for all but an unfortunate few in the wrong place at the wrong time.
The hysteria is laughable, and in fact people from Buffalo laugh at it.
i remember the state shutting down everything....all roads..all businesses....and the storm never came...not even an inch...businesses and folks lost millions...
