That was Sen. Mitt Romney, a Utah Republican, telling MSNBC that he thinks it’s time to bench former President Donald Trump following the GOP’s somewhat lackluster showing in last week’s midterm elections.
Despite some pundits predicting a “red wave” of Republican victories that would reclaim control of Congress, Democrats managed to hold onto the Senate, and the GOP picked up fewer seats in the House than expected.
And when Romney said he thought Trump was going to announce running for president for a third time on Tuesday, that’s when the senator broke out his “aging pitcher” metaphor.
“I know there’s some fans that love him,” Romney said, “but it’s time to get off the mound, because we have a real strong bench.”
Romney has been one of the few Republicans who has been vocal in criticizing Trump over the years, including voting to impeach him twice.
Trump has returned fire at Romney, for example calling him a “super RINO,” or Republican in Name Only, after Senate Republicans reached a deal with Democrats on infrastructure PAVE,

Didn’t this guy run for president once? He never even made it to 2nd base.
Yes, and these scum are always the first to say how we must always follow Reagans 11th commandment.
Except when they go on national media. It is okay when a lowlife RINO does it.
Look at all of these ‘Republicans’ popping up on MSNBC...Scarborough, Wallace, Steele, Romney...nothing to see here.
What has he ever won nationally
He got elected governor of the most liberal state of the country and anointed in Utah
Trump created a movement that is extremely powerful if we could stop the fraud
I can’t believe Romney said this. He would know a pitcher and a catcher if anyone would.
Does he have a point?
So willard is 75 and President Trump is 76...
Not only projection but hypocrisy on willard’s part!!!

Atta boy Mitt. At least you’re consistent.
There seem to be so many of their type that it is indeed hard to decide which of the many is worse. Bottom line, none of them are worth a -hit, lack ethics and character and do not deserve to be making laws for this nation.
I think the driving force behind Romney’s political career after 2012 has been spitefulness because he lost his chance at the presidency, and jealousy towards him who won. His essential shallowness doesn’t allow enough room for anything resembling real principles.
“I know there’s some fans that love him,” Romney said, “but it’s time to get off the mound, because we have a real strong bench.”
Watching rookie pitchers getting lit up like a Christmas Tree isn’t going to be fun.
Also, with the current umpires, would it matter?
I can see it now, hot shot pitcher throws a beautiful slider at the knees. The umpire shouts out:
“Ball One”
Romney is full of it, we don’t have a loaded bench.
Nor did he want one.
Better than being a ‘catcher’.
Oh, Mittens, you never disappoint us. Loyal to the last dagger in the back.
The Trump Desantis gambit is working perfectly to smoke out the losers.
Mitt- pay your taxes! Oh, wait.........
Got a mouse in your pocket Mitt?
LOL!
Sez a man who walks with a stick up his ass for Trump
