WASHINGTON—House Republicans backed Kevin McCarthy as speaker in a closed-door meeting Tuesday, a key step he needs toward winning the gavel, with the result also showing that he has more work to do to win the vote of the full chamber on the floor next year.
The vote showed the challenge that Mr. McCarthy faces in January when he must win 218 votes in a roll-call vote among all lawmakers present and voting, with a Republican majority that is expected to be the narrowest in recent history. All Democrats are expected to oppose him.

Republican leader Kevin McCarthy is taking the first major step Tuesday toward becoming House speaker, appearing before colleagues for a secret ballot election as he brushes past the objections of his right flank and begins a weeks-long sprint of deal-making to secure support.
He noted backing from Marjorie Taylor Greene and Jim Jordan as part of his “vast support.”
The formal vote for House speaker will come when the new Congress convenes in January, Before then, McCarthy will need to shore up support from 218 lawmakers with potentially just a few votes to spare.

I think that with a one or two vote margin, any defectors will throw the speakership to Pelosi. So it’s got to be MCCarthy.

That was Marjorie Taylor Greene’s stated reason and, IMHO, it’s a valid readon. She knows the conference and she knows that if it was other than McCarthy there are a couple of Liz Chaney types who would vote for a DemocRAT candidate.

Marjorie Taylor Greene says she’s supporting McCarthy because they need someone who won’t allow 1 or 2 votes to be pulled away. So why doesn’t she use that leverage herself to get a better speaker?

Since we are not a Constitutional Representative Republic anymore, guess it really doesn’t matter which Uniparty person is Speaker as the results are essentially the same.
