The Russian air force had deployed three times as many fighters and attack planes as the Ukrainian air force had in its entire inventory. Ukraine’s air defenses were disorganized and, in the case of certain key long-range radars, sitting out in the open where the Russians easily could target them.
The Russians had a firepower advantage. The Ukrainians had the same advantages every defender possesses over an invader: motivation, simpler logistics, familiar terrain. Either side might’ve prevailed—the Russians by dominating the air, the Ukrainians by preventing the Russians from dominating the air.
We know how it turned out. The Russian air campaign fizzled. Ukrainian air defenses stiffened. By month nine of the wider war, the Ukrainians were counterattacking, the Russians were retreating and the Russian air force was losing more planes and helicopters than the Ukrainian air force was. A lot more.
To understand how Russia’s aerial advantage evaporated, Justin Bronk, Nick Reynolds and Jack Watling from the Royal United Services Institute in London interviewed key Ukrainian officials. The result is the definitive study of the Ukraine air war’s first phase.

The increasing panic of Russian ground troops, overextended in a doomed attempt to capture Kyiv, compelled Russian pilots to switch from attacking Ukrainian air defenses to supporting the ground forces.
That’s when Ukraine’s most important air defenses—its Buk mobile missiles—forced Russian air crews into a deadly, low-altitude trap. One that badly bloodied Russia’s best flying regiments and set the conditions for the aerial impasse that has come to define the war.

The war is a textbook example of how not to run a war
Fti, this is a good study of why Russia, despite having superior numbers of aircraft, not only did not gain air superiority at any time during the war, it is actually losing airspace to the Ukrainians
“Ukraine now needs rapid deliveries of SAM launchers and missile ammunition, [anti-aircraft guns] and ideally Western fighter aircraft to prevent a sustained strike campaign that could, if unopposed, thwart the dominant battlefield momentum that Ukrainian troops have fought so hard to win.”
And the last paragraph of the article is the whole point of the article. Send more money and more stuff to Ukraine.
You guys have troubles understanding the meaning of air superiority. Last time I’ve check it is the Russian air which is striking all across Ukraine, not Ukraine hitting Russian targets because their air force is all but ceased to exist.
That is exactly what is called air superiority.
Yep, Ukraine has a dwindling number of air defenses which hit aircraft sometimes.
Based on your same twisted logic the US didn’t have the air superiority over Vietnam.
a troll would post non facts or ad hominem attacks. An example is post #5
The point is that just a decade ago 70% of Russians considered the US a friendly country. Now 90% consider you a bitter enemy. How many Americans do you think it is going to kill over a couple of generations?
>> Send more money and more stuff to Ukraine.
ZZZelllinnnsskkkyyy will sell half of OUR stuff to (...who?...) and pocket the proceeds, use the other half of OUR stuff to put the hurt on the Rooskies, and then crow about what a ballsy tactical genius he is.
I have sympathy with the Ukrainian people (mostly). But I HATE that corrupt son of a bitch.
“How many Americans do you think it is going to kill over a couple of generations?”
Not many Americans, but lots of Democrats.
It is not a threat, just a fact. Why do you think the foreign interventions were relatively bloodless since the end of the Cold War? Russia was on the American side or neutral. It is not going to be the case for obvious reason anymore.
Does Chrystia know that you're loose this late, Chummy Boy?
You must like the rolled-up newspaper.
Unfortunately, mostly conservatives, because democrats do not enlist into the military.
and now in November
pretty significant pushback
Absolutely none. You Russians are not going to be able to kill Americans because Putin is well on his way to destroying Russia,
