A battalion commander is forbidding soldiers under his command from wearing their Army-issued fleece jackets while on a rotation in South Korea, where local average temperatures during the winter frequently dip below freezing.
"The fleece cold weather jacket is not authorized for wear as an outer garment," Lt. Col. Geoffrey Lynch, commander of 1st Battalion, 36th Infantry Regiment, 1st Armored Division, said in an August memo reviewed by Military.com.

“I knew an officer in Vietnam War who did two tours enlisted before he was commissioned. He refused to allow his troops to take ponchos to the field. He believed that warm, dry soldiers were the first to die in a firefight. I read a letter he got after he returned. The troops thanked him for keeping them alive”.
What an idiot and I find it hard to believe the troops thanked him
Us Grunts in Nam used our ponchos as tents during monsoon season. We tied off the four corners and bent a branch down and attached the hood to the branch and the branch kept the poncho taught. With a poncho liner we stayed warm and dry. Two Grunts could fit under one “hootch”.
The rain hitting a poncho and foliage in the jungle sounds the same. Been there, done that.
32° Heat undergarments are awesome.
Yeah the fleece is a zip out liner to the BDU/ODU field jacket. It’s not outerwear however you can wear it inside in the office. If you’re going outside you have to put the shell on over the fleece.
The complaint is against the uniform regulation manual for that particular service which clearly states that it is not an outer garment, but it also clearly states that it can’t be worn indoors without the shell.
These fleece jackets are great...I am wearing one right now as I am reading this thread. I wish we had these when I was stationed in Germany 50 years ago.
I had never seen them (came long after I got out). I’m lol have to check out the local surplus store. Does look comfy, but only ‘cool’ weather protective.
Who cares if they’re cold so long as they’ve got their pronoun use figured out
In Korea, if you don’t you could look like that dude in the Shining
Sportsmans Guide has them brand new in the package for $39 plus shipping.
Thanks!
