NY Times editorial board member slams Fetterman, other candidates reluctant to debate: ‘risk to our democracy’

New York Times editorial board member Michelle Cottle admonished Democratic U.S. Senate candidate John Fetterman and other prominent midterm candidates for shying away from debates in their campaigns.

Cottle claimed in an opinion piece on Monday that political candidates who have been trying to get out of debates are participating in a trend that reflects a "troubling sign of our political times," and puts "democracy at risk of sliding farther into crisis."

Her commentary came as part of a piece previewing the upcoming debate between Fetterman and his Republican opponent, Dr. Mehmet Oz, which is set to air Tuesday, a debate she described as having "captured the high-stakes, uncertain, migraine-inducing essence of this freaky election cycle.".....

"For the past decade, the number of debates in competitive races has been on a downward slide, and they appear headed the way of floppy disks and fax machines," Cottle wrote, adding, "This election season, barring unforeseen developments, the major Senate contenders in Georgia, Arizona, North Carolina and Florida, as in Pennsylvania, will face off only once."

The author mentioned how the midterm Senate race in Nevada will include zero debates, adding, "Likewise, the Republican and Democratic candidates in Missouri have yet to agree on conditions for appearing together."

Cottle stated, "This trend is not limited to the Senate. Several candidates for governor have so far opted to shun debates." She even noted how the GOP "voted to keep its candidates out of events hosted by the nonpartisan Commission on Presidential Debates unless it overhauls its rules for how the debates are conducted."

"nonpartisan Commission on Presidential Debates"

The stupid party keeps agreeing to attack moderators against their candidates. I think there should be a 3 debate format:

2 debates where each candidate selects a moderator. 1 debate with an agreed upon moderator.

The time to b*tch about the rats’ reluctance to debate was before 10 to 20% of the votes had already been sent in.

1.) Stop it with the democracy crap. We don’t live in a democracy, so what is really at risk? The economy. People being victims of crime. Schools, hospitals and government services being overloaded with illegal aliens. I could go on, but you get the idea. 2.) Not debating is not a problem really, it’s people who vote for those that don’t debate. In PA, half of mail-in votes have already been cast before Fetterman’s disaster. Which leads to the third problem. 3.) Mail in voting and election fraud.

It is just a progression for the "Democracy" crowd. Remember when Congressmen had town halls? That was shut down because people tried to voice their opinions especially during the Tea Party revolt.

Censorship of social media accounts and outright cancelling of opinions as misinformation or disinformation was next. Followed by major networks not showing remarks by the President.

Now debates are no longer allowed or shunned because the left deems it too dangerous to even allow them to be spoken even by candidates running for office.

Lots of people already voted for their sweetheart Fetterman in early voting. The D is a D for Donkey or Dumb or something else.

The NYT hacks are only complaining about the reluctance to debate because it's starting to look like that strategy may backfire on some of those candidates.

If (for example) Katie Hobbs was running ten points ahead of Kari Lake right now, this op-ed never would have been published.

Funny how with leftist moderators, leftist commentators and leftist candidates, Democrats still refuse to debate the evil republicans. And the useful idiots still don’t or won’t accept that they are dupes to a flawed ideology.

There is nothing as uncomfortable for a person invested in a completely delusional worldview than a debate with someone who isn’t.

Up here in Washington state, Tiffany Smiley, the republican candidate, debated Senator Patty Murray the other day in Spokane. According to most sources, Smiley handed Murray’s ass to her. All that Murray seem to be able to push was abortion. Smiley spoke about everything else that people actually were interested in and are concerned about.
Most polls still have Smiley behind Murray, but Smiley has been gaining quickly. We shall see come November 8.

I agree with you about the moderators.

But what is really puts “democracy at risk” is voting for Democrats like Fetterman and Biden who haven’t got a clue about anything.

“nonpartisan Commission on Presidential Debates”

“Nonpartisan” means leftist—every time.
