Cannabis users soon may be a majority among young adults in the District of Columbia and several pot-friendly states, a trend that points to a potential future of destigmatized marijuana across much of the nation.
More than two-fifths of young men and women nationwide now use cannabis at least on occasion, according to federal data, a quotient that has risen steadily in a decade of relentless legalization. Much of the trend is driven by young women, who have all but closed a decades-long gender gap in marijuana use.

Yes. Drug abuse destroys a country.
Marijuana is not as bad as heroin I know. There are degrees.
But one main problem with marijuana is that it is heavily promoted as benign, harmless, even GOOD for you.
It is not. It is bad for your physical and mental health.
Is it possible to even say "several deleterious societal developments" when one is drunk or high ?
They make medical grade vapes with zero smoke or carcinogens. Some as small as cigarettes. As well as edibles and topical medications.
It’s easy to consume cannabis with zero smoke since legalization
AND.... cause improper spelling.
Whoa, there FRiend. Stop and think for a second.
We're not against pot just so we can restrict someone's freedom, or play nanny to people that just want to do what they want.
We are against pot because many people that use it leech off the system, don't pay their rent, steal, don't work, ruin the streets of our cities, get on disability for "medical" reasons (reason being they are too stoned to work), drive stoned (endangering everyone,) and are generally self-centered jerks that make the lives of everyone around them miserable.
You love the Constitution? Show me in the Constitution where it says anyone can do anything, regardless of the pain and destruction they cause to other people?
Look, if potheads smoked their dope and didn't bother anyone and didn't leech off society, we wouldn't have a problem with them. But that's not the case. And legalization has made life for the rest of us worse.
Oh, the spelling police.
Smoke dope all you want, but don’t make a spelling mistake on a newsgroup post, or the spelling police will be called to the scene.
I have plenty of data as people here frequently post their age, anecdotal memories from 1960, etc. Are you suggesting that FR is not comprised of primarily an older demographic? I don’t mean it as an insult, but an observation that informs the views of many.
Speak for yourself! The only time that I drink is a glass of wine or beer with dinner, a single glass. Like many others, I like the taste. It complements the meal. I will occasionally also have an after dinner drink, again a single glass for its taste. I actually do not enjoy the feeling if I drink too much. Can alcohol be abused? Of course it can but it can also be used in a responsible manner. Drugs, on the other hand, are intended only for the high. It is dishonest, as well as unconvincing, to justify drug use behind the use of alcohol.
“People who use caffeine, nicotine, and alcohol are using drugs.”
Yeah, and bottle rockets are missiles.
What’s your point? Other than moronically misplaced moral relativity, I mean.
I just thought it was rather ichronic.
Shouldn't you be asking that to the women ?
Yes, especially those Wesleyans - wasn’t John Weasley Hardin himself a Methodist?
:-)
It does not matter WHY you are “against pot.” I already told you why I am against pot. That is not even on the radar screen. Nor does it matter that you don’t want to play nanny, because that is PRECISELY what you are doing. There are many things and I mean MANY things which create a whole bevy of social problems. Drug abuse certainly does, but again, THAT IS NOT THE ISSUE.
You wrote : “You love the Constitution? Show me in the Constitution where it says anyone can do anything, regardless of the pain and destruction they cause to other people?”
I can cause as much “pain and destruction” as I wish, so long as I do not infringe on your rights to life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness. In answer to your question though, the 9th and 10 amendments state SPECIFICALLY that if the rest of the Constitution (try reading it sometime!) does not SPECIFICALLY grant the authority to legislate on an issue, then those areas are off limits to the federal government. THAT is where it says so, in answer to your question. It does not matter what an “atmosphere” of pain it causes. It does not matter what moral lassitude it causes. It does not matter what kind of lazy demotivated people it creates. I am actually sick of these kinds of stupid uninformed arguments.
IF THE CONSTITUTION ALLOWS THE FED TO LEGISLATE ON IT, THEY CAN. IF IT DOES NOT SPECIFICALLY ENUMERATE THAT IS AN AREA OF AUTHORITY, THEN IT IS TYRANNY.
It does not matter that stoners leech off society. It does not matter that they have a variety of problems and moral failings. One thing the blue haired generation just does not get is that you can’t draw a fence around a proscribed activity and say “well A is illegal, and B has a high degree of correlation so we will outlaw B as well” If your generation was stupid enough to establish a welfare state, then don’t go pointing fingers at stoners, illegal aliens, layabouts, and unwed mothers who are baby factories and whine about them abusing it. Deal with the welfare state, and don’t go looking for another path for the federal government to expand once again. You have already caused enough ruin in that area.
I ain’t touching that, no how, no way. lol
There are a lot of pothead FReepers.
There are a lot of drunkard FReepers.
There are a lot of judgemental Freepers.
Uh, even occasional drinking esp. hard liquors may accelerate health problems. Alcohol kills every living cell it encounters, even brain cells where you are enjoying it the most.
Touche tanstaafl! I think of it like stockholm syndrome but they have multiple choices for their path to ‘victimhood’.
Now supposed we eliminate 50+ government agencies that are unconstitutional along with 80-90% of the laws on the books that are also unconstitutional and see how many will breath deep in the ideals of true freedom like the founding fathers only envisioned 200+ years ago.
Would you please read this and explain it to me? Who do you think you committing "pain and destruction" on?
