Former New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie (R) on Sunday said former President Trump kept classified documents “as a trophy” in regards to an FBI search of Mar-a-Lago where authorities seized troves of White House materials with various classified markings.
“He wanted to keep these documents as a trophy. That’s what they were, more than anything,” Christie, and ABC News contributor and former Trump adviser, said on “This Week,” referring to over 100 classified documents and dozens of empty folders labeled classified found at Trump’s property.

EVERY President has kept certain specific documents as “trophies”. And regardless of much rhetoric to the contrary, the specious argument that the documents remained “classified” when retained by the President after exiting office, is a red herring. The President, whomever he (or she) may be, has and always did have the authority to declassify those documents on his own recognizance.
The National Archives and Records Administration just wanted to get into a distance-and-direction urination contest with the 45th President. But they should have not have been facing a headwind.

Not addressed so far as I can see is whether the documents were copies or unique originals. If the documents were copies and Trump declassified them what was the problem? If they were unique originals, then there could be a problem.
