Herschel Walker, the GOP nominee for a U.S. Senate seat in Georgia, said people who are worried about the high cost of insulin should “eat right” in his only debate against Sen. Raphael Warnock (D-Ga.) on Friday.
During an exchange about the economy and the high cost of living, Warnock touted his work passing legislation lowering prescription drug prices, including a $35 cap on monthly insulin costs. He noted that Walker had opposed the law, which is called the Inflation Reduction Act.
Walker responded by saying the Inflation Reduction Act had not reduced inflation. Then he argued that people who need insulin should think about eating better.
“I believe in reducing insulin but at the same time, you gotta eat right. I know many people that’s on insulin. Unless you’re eating right, insulin is doing you no good. So you have to get food prices down and you gotta get gas down so you can go get insulin,” the GOP candidate said.

Walker should not be talking about the treatment of diabetes three weeks befor Election Day as a campaign issue. Whatever he has to say about it is ignorant as his point will never be taken well and he should know this but he doesn’t. He doesn’t know about campaigning which is his job he certainly doesn’t know about medicine
Any conservative in Georgia that doesn’t vote for Walker because of “reasons” is actively voting to keep a Democrat senate majority, Biden judicial picks being rubber stamped, and cabinet picks being rubber stamped.
Walker will vote conservative. Walker will contribute to booting the democrats out of the majority in the senate. These reasons are enough to vote for him with everything else considered.
The question nobody is asking, including conservatives, is why government is involved in insulin and disease.
Fake news. He said he believes in lowering the costs but that diabetics also should to follow a good diet for health reasons. This is controversial?
Even if you are Type I, reducing carbs reduces insulin requirements. And makes it easier to match insulin levels against intake, reducing complications over the long term.

Bernstein is a Type I. He’s 88 years old, has been diabetic for 76 years, and he still has all his feet and toes.

A healthful diet after being diagnosed can make a big difference. Especially a low carb diet.
He is from a tiny town in rural middle Georgia. Don't be like the urban gangstas who frequently express contempt for "them country n*****s." They are a whole lot smarter than you think they sound.
Herschel sounds like very single doctor. They all advocate for healthy eating to either control or stop diabetes in it’s tracks. My father was type II.... when he lost weight and started excising he no longer needed insulin.
over time he did not continue taking care of himself and ended up on insulin. But it is sound medical advice.
A drug rep I know who sells insulin said he would be out of a job if people stopped eating junk food and ate healthy. Would be down to providing meds for type 1 diabetes and a few recalcitrant cases

Eating right does not reverse or really even effect the condition of insulin dependency among those who suffer from Type I diabetes.
The bottom line is, for those struck with the lifelong chronic affliction of Type I Diabetes, the Isle of Langerhans cells in the pancreases have suffered an autoimmune attack. This attack was brought on by reasons having nothing to do with their diet. Such cell slow, and then ***permanently*** stop, producing insulin. Nothing those individuals can do with their diet subsequent to the failure of these Isle of Langerhans cells will change that basic fact.
What eating right throughout the rest of their life (hopefully long and otherwise healthy) ***does*** do for those individuals can help them approximate the healthy day-to-day lifestyle of ordinary non-diabetic individuals, and forestall or even possibly limit or prevent certain downstream physiological consequences in their bodies, largely caused by unaddressed chronic high glucose levels in the blood, which for Type I Diabetes sufferers does ***not*** typically include obesity, but ***does*** typically include significant cardiovascular problems, typically later in life.
These cardiovascular problems late in life are potentially avoidable, to at least some extent, for most who suffer from Type I Diabetes. Such problems can offer be seen in older individuals who have suffered from Type I Diabetes from their youth (hence the moniker “juvenile onset diabetes”), and will often include a certain characteristic pattern of intermittent blockage/narrowing of cardiac arteries that is typically not seen except in these specific patients. Once again it can be seen as a result of a life lead by such patients in which they did not successfully keep their blood glucose levels properly under control. But note well that this (among those who are dependent on an external source of the insulin we all need to live) is separate and distinct from the problem of obesity seen during the here and now by those diagnosed with Type II (Insulin ****Resistant**”) Diabetes, and among whom poor eating habits typically ***cause*** their diabetes problem in the first place and therefore unnecessarily burden the nation’s healthcare system.

How does that work? Keep in mind diabetes research is still ongoing so even the medical establishment may not be completely up to date. Yet according to you if Walker does not grasp diabetes such ignorance means he would not be qualified to vote on abortion restrictions or tax reform or increased police funding. Doesn’t make sense to me.

Agreed. Better to remain silent and appear a fool, than to open one’s mouth and remove all doubt.
But this is an incredibly common mistake borne of honest ignorance and will, IMHO, be forgiven and forgotten by the vast majority of the GA electorate, as long as Walker does not compound the problem by saying something similar in the future, thereby indicating that he failed to learn from his mistake.
Not trying to sound uncaring about your friends husband-how does he know which of the two (insulin and diet) are keeping his diabetes in check.
I have read a lot of Dr Mercola’s personnal experiences in dealing with diabetic patients. That is why I ask.
