No more massive strikes on Ukraine, for now - Putin
BBC MSN ^ | 10/14/2022 | BBC

Russian President Vladimir Putin has said there is no need for more massive strikes on Ukraine, days after the heaviest bombardment of the country since the war began.

He said most designated targets of the strikes had been hit, adding that it was not his aim to destroy Ukraine.

Moscow's goal of mobilising 300,000 men would be met within two weeks, he said.

Mr Putin's words come as Russian forces seem stalled and Ukraine advances, almost eight months since the invasion.

Speaking to journalists after a summit with regional leaders in Kazakhstan's capital Astana, the Russian leader said that the recent strikes had destroyed 22 out of the 29 targets in Ukraine set by the military and that "they are getting" the remaining seven.

"There's no need for massive strikes. We now have other tasks," he said.

He said it was not Russia's intention to destroy Ukraine, but he did not regret the invasion.

"What is happening today is not pleasant, to put things mildly," he said. "But all the same, [if Russia hadn't attacked] we would have been in the same situation, only the conditions would have been worse for us. So we're doing everything correctly and at the right time."

If the Ukrainian army is destroyed, like McGregor claims, why do the Russians admit they are losing ground in Ukraine?

What does the one thing have to do with the other?

Giving up ground while inflicting heavy losses on your enemy seems like sound military strategy, especially when you're able to retake the territory later with a larger force designed to hold the territory.

The Russians started their invasion in Winter. They didn’t win. Why would they win now? I don’t have any idea how much manpower the Ukies have left but I know Putin’s army is not Brezhnev’s. He doesn’t have 150 divisions. They are moving T62s to the front. Even Saddam didn’t use 62s. If they’re waiting for Winter, WHY, if they have so much stuff. What the hell have they been doing for the last 8 months? Given Western assistance the Ukies have more stuff than they had 8 months ago and better stuff than Russia. If they weren’t annihilated in March why would the be annihilated this February.

Hero Ukraine has won! They took the best the Russians could dish out and survived! The Russian are all out of rockets and can’t build more because they don’t have chips! All they have are dumb bombs and no planes they dare risk to Ukraine AA Rockets and fighters. Watch as more cities are liberated in days and the Russians forced to pull back. Now Ukraine need to march on the Russian Oil Fields! Seize them (with CIA-MI6 help) and pump them dry as reparations for all the war crimes Putin ordered. Let them keep what is left of their Bridge so they can escape the wrath of the Ukraine People. It will be over by November 15th. I still believe Ukraine has taught us that Russia is a paper tiger—not to be feared. Now Poland could beat them by herself. Putin will be out of power by the end of October—if not dead.

So your contention is the Russians fought for months and suffered significant losses (they admit this) to take territory that they planned to give up while taking significant losses, so they could regroup with more men and equipment and retake the same territory they all ready fought for while incurring still more losses? That’s what you believe? That makes sense to you?

You wrote...

This is simply speculation since I don't know Putin and no one here does... but I do not believe their intent was to conquer all of Ukraine. Nor to recreate the former Soviet Union. After failing to negotiate a peace, they took most of the territory along their border.

If they’re waiting for Winter, WHY, if they have so much stuff. What the hell have they been doing for the last 8 months?

Again, totally speculation... I believe they are now massing for a "frozen ground" invasion that will result in Russia taking all land east of the Dnieper River. All of it. Any Ukrainian opposition in this scenario would be destroyed. This will be a large operation that will shift from being classified as a small operation to a war. The destruction of the bridge turned many citizens in Russia to supporting a broader effort and, frankly, if Putin didn't take severe actions, I believe he would have been eliminated one way or the other.

If they weren’t annihilated in March why would the be annihilated this February.

I do not believe the intent was to annihilate them before. I believe that has changed. At this point, any opposition will be eliminated as they take almost half the (Russian supporting) part of Ukraine.

Again, just my opinion based on all I read from both sides and I could be wrong.

Or he's being obtuse.

Based on some of his comments, there may have been formal training in prevarication.

I can see why Larry blocked him...🤔

Nice scarecrow...are you a fiction writer or is that your formal training kicking in?

Russia has not admitted taking significant losses at any point of their SMO. In fact, the most recent statement from the Russian MoD put overall losses at ~6,000 (which includes DPR/LPR forces who have been formally incorporated in RUAF, but apparently not Wagners).

Now I suppose we'll have to unpack what you mean by "significant" to determine out how far your stretching the truth to fit your agenda.

Of all the zeeper propagandists you are the most laughable. Russia has about 100 times more precision artillery and HIMARS likes in theater and the war is still continues.
You have zero understanding of NSW. Pentagon realizes full well thst after 30 years of non-wars it is outclassed by powers like China and Russia hence the asinine idiocy you are pushing.

Losing territory that (according to them) is now actually Russsian sovereignty, don’t forget.

3 months ago Russia could’ve argued it’s typical ear back and forth. Thanks to the bullshit referendums and dumbass coronation ceremony they’ve lost that narrative domestically.

Outside Russia it’s “Ukraine fights back with European, American and Turkish help”, inside Russia it’s “We’re being salami sliced by a bankrupt pissant neighbor with no navy but still sank our warship, with no air force but keeps knocking our planes down, with no ammo but is being resupplied by our surrenders... It’s all NATO’s fault!”

“ Russia has not admitted taking significant losses at any point of their SMO.”

You really do truly suck at this. You’re like the Russian military of internet debate. The harder you try, the deeper the hole you dig. This is from April 7, 2022, before Russia started getting kicked out of territory it fought so hard to capture.

“ The Russian army has suffered “significant losses” in the country’s unprovoked war with Ukraine, Dmitry Peskov, a Kremlin spokesman, acknowledged Thursday.

“We have significant losses of troops,” Peskov said during a live interview with Sky News. “It’s a huge tragedy for us.”

Good point. So the reality is at this point that Russia is losing territory and Ukraine is gaining territory. Only an idiot would consider that Russia “winning”. Based on other comments on this thread, I guess that’s accurate.

Larry blocked me because he’s an intellectual coward. He couldn’t answer the same questions you failed to answer, and rather than trying, he pulled the plug. He’d do the same thing here if he could. He’s like the college professor you have to agree with or he gives you an F. No effort to support his own points. Just a block.

Here’s a link to the twitter thread he blocked me on. Read it yourself. I asked simple questions. Responded to his. And he cut and ran.

Ivan, you can’t BS me. I’ve been to Russia and smelled your bus station squat toilets. I’ve seen the corruption and Potemkin fakeness of Russian society up close. I’ve toured KGB torture museums. There are many valid reasons most all your neighbors hate you and support Ukraine massively. You’ve earned it.

Hilariously, I’m not a fan of Ukraine due to the way they treated President Trump. So you’re barking up the wrong tree, there. I’m just busy watching the corrupt and incompetent Russian army being destroyed bit by bit Ukraine “farmers and miners”. It doesn’t feel good to be on the losing side, does it?

By the way, did they ever find those missing one million winter uniforms? It’s getting cold...

I have been to Poland and have seen worse. You can see the same stuff everywhere. If you want to see corruption you can see into every military, the US in the first place.

It seems to me you are postulating effectively the same thing:

There is some number of heavy ground attack missiles Russia analyzes that it must keep in reserve to counter NATO. Maybe a few to keep China “honest”, and a few to frighten Japan. That number may well have gone up based on Russia’s experience in Ukraine, this year. Finland’s joining NATO also must come into play.

I really DON”T know what the numbers are, but taking a middle ground figure from what’s out there, let’s say Russia had 2500 of these missiles on 10/1/2022, and figures it needs a reserve of 2000. Considering the limited effect* of this week’s barrage on the Ukie’s war effort, Russia really doesn’t have a lot left to work with and still maintain their reserve.

*This is no scientific survey, but judging by the proportion of Ukie bloggers and vloggers who had power knocked out on the 1st 2 days of the barrage, and have it back on now, even the electrical grid attacks in total hurt the Ukies less than the attack on the Kerch Bridge hurt Russia.

IF Russia can obtain enough of the Iranian drones and Ukraine / NATO can’t find a way to counter, the drones may become an effective sort of super long range artillery. That is problematic. However, with a little creativity, relatively inexpensive counters should be possible.
