Ron DeSantis eases voting rules in Florida counties devastated by Hurricane Ian

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (AP) — Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis on Thursday issued an executive order expanding voting access for the midterm elections in three counties where Hurricane Ian destroyed polling places and displaced thousands of people.

The move, which followed requests from Lee, Charlotte and Sarasota counties and voting rights groups, comes as Florida begins to undertake a massive recovery from the Category 4 hurricane that hit on Sept. 28 and leveled parts of the state’s southwest.

The order extends the number of early voting days in the three counties and authorizes election supervisors to designate additional early voting locations, steps that allow voters to cast ballots at any polling place in their registered county from Oct. 24 through Election Day, Nov. 8. Election supervisors can also relocate or consolidate polling places if necessary.

It also waives training requirements for poll workers and suspends a signature requirement for voters requesting to have a mail ballot sent to an address that is different from the one election officials have on file

No, they are GOP areas and he’s going to take a lot of flak for this. Not that he should or will care.

I like DeSantis. However, per the US Constitution the individual state legislatures determine the rules of each state’s elections. He should have gone to the legislature to get these temporary changes.

2020 was stolen via unconstitutional changes of some states voting procedures. They bypassed the state legislatures and made changes in voting procedures via executive action. This was clearly 100% unconstitutional.

Why should he take flak?

Agree. DeSantis is my Top Gov, but I’m not buying his authority to change voting law.

Your point is well takes. The real question is had the hurricane hit broward, palm beach and Miami-dade would he have done the same thing? I think he would have.

As for the constitutionality this is a state issue. Florida is strange as their legislative session is only 12 weeks and in the early part of each year. The executive can issue emergency orders such as these constitutionally when the legislature is not in session. This is unlike North Carolina and PA who the legislature was in session or had acted when the executive directly took the legislatures authority.

However I do agree it’s a little close to home and will be scrutinized closely.

Exactly!

Look, DeSantis isn’t going to get it right every time. Here
his instincts are great, but his process isn’t.

I can tell what he was trying to do, and I support the end
result.

He needs to use the Legislature so we can demand the Left
do it. That’s very important.

It’s a very big problem when we break the very laws we
should be able to demand they observe.

In 2020 there were very key states that did an end run
on their Legislature to change election rules. We should
have taken them down over that.

Every vote taken in under a process that is not
compliant with the Constitution, should be null and void.

Keep a clean process folks, and speak up when others
don’t.

Yup and I am pretty sure the FL legislature is still physically in tact. Some of what he is ordering will make vote fraud a lot easier. Why is there no time for signature verification?

Doesn’t the US Constitution give state legislatures the authority conduct elections, not state governors???

The Florida Legislature is not in session. Having the Legislature approve this would call for a special session, which itself is not an immediate process. The Legislature only is in session 60 days per year here.

Democrats will like that. It gives them a chance to cheat. Maybe not as much as they like, but cheat they will. How any sane person could vote Democrat is beyond my powers of comprehension.
