When you have to force people to fight for your cause you are heading down the wrong path. You will have a fighting force with zero interest in it’s assignment other than to save its own skin.
Ukraine did the same on day one...stopping men with their families and “recruiting” them on the spot.
For those who don’t understand the concept of countries that follow the Napoleonic Code type of legal system which is quite different from the common law, every person must have a registered address. So places like Russia require people staying in hotels to register with the police to find criminals, etc. In this case they are looking for draft dodgers. Also understand that in the former soviet union, people need to have I.D. cards, called internal passports, for every day life, banking, getting a phone contract, etc. Travel passports, for international travel, are different and cost more.

Don’t underestimate the skill of Russian propagandists though. They have been successful at convincing at least a significant portion of the Russian population that this is a necessary war, and that if they aren’t fighting in Ukraine, they’ll soon be fighting Americans outside Moscow.
