Land grabs, hundreds of thousand of conscripts thrown on to the front lines, and a nuke for anyone who dares stand in his way: Vladimir Putin has spent the past week doubling down on his war in Ukraine.
But his bluster belies a simple fact: Russia is losing the war, and he knows it.
The despot is desperate. His army is in tatters, his battleplans shot, he's burning through his cash reserves at an unsustainable rate, and winter is looming. Meanwhile Ukraine's army continues to advance across the country, giving Kyiv a viable path to victory.
According to Alp Sevimlisoy - millennium fellow at think-tank Atlantic Council - that would mean Putin being deposed, Russia itself breaking apart, and NATO in a face-off with China over the spoils.
The West must begin preparing for that eventuality now, he adds, otherwise it will open the door for Beijing to muscle into regions such as Siberia, central Asia, Africa and South America where it already has toe-holds but will see opportunities as Russian power fades.
'We have to move into vacuums, seek to exert influence, and then we have to face up to the People's Republic of China. China is a globally-connected superpower, and we have to combat them effectively,' he said.

As much as I despise Putin and hope he’s taken out, I’m not sure I agree with dismembering Russia, if only because there needs to be some form of buffer vs. China.
Only China has a big enough army to garrison a significant part of Russia.
In the rest of the country, it will be White Army versus Red Army or more likely an assortment of armies controlled by various factions and warlords, i.e. the usual situation for failed states — a nuclear Somalia.
Kadyrov's forces only do these things...

“Russia is losing the war” and “winter is coming” are historically not associated with Russian defeat.
The Daily Mail has been totally garbage on Ukraine, President Trump and plenty of other matters.
You are right about one thing, break up Russia and you will be taking all of Russia's nuclear weapons, post launch.

Just imagine a world where Iran mula’s are thrown out, Kim in North Korea is swinging from a bridge and the North is united with the south in a de-nuclearized democracy, and Russia is broken up into a dozen pieces, and also de-nuclearized.
That would basically be the world peace those pageant contestants have been wanting for decades!
Then the entire world could turn it’s attention to ridding the world of lie of socialism through the ballot box.
