UK _ Chainsaw sales soar as Brits buy 35,000 woodburners in three months to keep themselves warm during the energy crisis

Retail giant Toolstation revealed that sales have rocketed by a third recently The news comes as people have been finding cheaper ways to heat their homes Experts warn the rise in woodburning could lead to higher pollution levels

The energy crisis is leading cash-strapped Britons to explore new ways to generate heat.

First, sales of woodburning stoves soared by 40 per cent. Now, it has emerged that chainsaws have seen a surge in demand – to cut wood for the stoves.

Retail giant Toolstation yesterday revealed that sales have rocketed by a third in recent weeks. The firm believes the increase is driven by customers using them to cut logs up for woodburners.

A spokesman for the firm, which has more than 500 UK stores, said: ‘During the last few weeks we’ve seen sales of chainsaws increase by a third.

‘We suspect the demand is being driven by customers firing up their chainsaws to cut logs and timber for woodburners as many try to soften the impact of energy hikes.’

The rush to buy chainsaws comes as families face the prospect of energy bills hitting record highs despite the new £2,500 price cap for a typical household. Woodburning stove sales leapt by 40 per cent between April to June to over 35,000 compared to 25,000 for the same period last year.

The Stove Industry Alliance said the trend ‘clearly indicates that consumers are taking action to help cushion themselves against spiralling home heating bills’.

The rush to buy chainsaws comes as people across the country have been exploring cheaper alternatives to gas to heat their homes following an announcement by UK watchdog Ofgem that it would increase the energy price cap.

Energy bills were set to rise to £3,549 from tomorrow for the typical household,

10,000 wood burning stoves in stock? Seems highly unlikely.

How many regulations are there in the UK for cutting down trees?

My chainsaw needs are suburban and modest, so I have an electric one. Plug in models. A regular one and one mounted on a pole for pruning frees. AKA a pole saw. I have two electric two pole saws with different bar lengths.

Its October 1st seems pretty late in the year to be cutting down trees for firewood, my experience has been you need to be cutting down the trees in June, July, August, to give it time to dry out and cure.

As a kid, we use to cut down 1-2 cords per year plus some fat lighter for starting the fire, we always cut and stacked the wood in the summer so it would be ready when it got cold.

++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

Any ‘regulations’ go by the wayside when you’re going to freeze to death (or be super uncomfortable) if you don’t have wood to burn.

It makes me laugh (ironically) because all the “Greenies”who want to save the earth with their climate change rot & tree hugging, think nothing of imposing solar power, windmills, etc. (plus EVs) on a populace when those sources are no where near enough for basic needs - staying warm in the winter being a major survival need. The result of their callous impositions is that people cut down those precious, huggable trees wherever they can find them and burn wood (lots of smoke). It’s not just the UK ... it’s Europe. Forests in Germany are ‘disappearing’ rapidly as people cut wood - the Black Forest may end up the Bare Forest.

Too late to be putting up wood for this winter. Firewood needs to dry out for a year. Burn it “green” and you’ll get much less heat. I also can predict a rash of chimney fires from the creosote buildup before the winter is over.

Since ‘green’ wood doesn’t burn - it’s more likely chain saws will be used for cutting up furniture. Two wood chairs from a second hand store will take the edge off the cold for a few hours.

I have been cutting fire wood for over 40 years. Most people have no business around a chain saw.
Alway have 2 cord of wood carried over from the previous year.
I also only cut standing dead trees. Let them be for 2 years, and cut them up. No need to wait. Check them with a moisture meter, and burn it if needed.

I thought wood burning stoves were illegal in Europe.

Chimney sweeps are making a comeback. They'll make big money if only for a short time...or will it be a short time?

Good thing the UK has all those old houses will good chimneys.
