As Ed pointed out yesterday, there were indications from Danish and Swedish authorities that the leaks from the Nord Stream pipelines were the result of explosions, i.e. deliberate sabotage not accidents. All eyes immediately turned to Russia who has been playing games with gas deliveries through the pipelines for months. The NY Times created this graph showing the gas supply over time. As you can see, it took a sudden dip in June and then was up and down until this month when they shut it off indefinitely.

Still, with the gas already cut off, why bother sabotaging the pipelines? The fact that the exact motive was unclear seemed to leave some doubt about who was responsible. But today we’re learning a bit more about why Europe is pointing the finger at Russia.

Russian ships pass through the area on a weekly basis so seeing them in the area prior to the pipeline explosion doesn’t prove a connection. Officially, the US is being more hesitant about assigning blame for this than their European counterparts. National Security adviser Jake Sullivan did refer to the leaks as “apparent sabotage” but beyond that US officials aren’t committing themselves publicly.

A few clueless Americans might fall for the media propaganda, but I doubt the majority of the German people are that stupid to think this was done by Russia. They know the US was behind this, and will remember this angrily when they’re freezing this winter and their economy shuts down. All of our actions in regards to Ukraine have only benefitted the US while screwing over Europe, and it’s just a matter of time before the European people take notice.
Wouldn’t surprise me if there was civil unrest in Europe this winter, with a few governments being taken down. And soon after that the EU itself comes under threat of breaking apart. A few European countries might decide they were better off staying on friendly terms with Russia, and that the US is working against their interests.
“I don’t much care who took the pipeline out, but I do think, if Russia can’t defend its assets in the Baltic Sea, then it probably shouldn’t be invading European countries.”
So, if someone sabotages one of our pipelines in the US, say, Dominion pipeline, which was left undefended last year from a cyberattack, then can we thus conclude that the United States cannot defend it’s assets and should cease all overseas actions, and redeploy our worldwide assets to guard critical infrastructure at home? Maybe even our border?
I think this line of reasoning needs a little work, especially the conclusion part.
The Russians may have done it to blame on the US.
The US may have done it to blame on the Russians.
I doubt we will ever know unless Putin or Biden outright claims responsibility.
Don't hold your breath.

No pipeline for Russia removes possibility of negotiating with Europe.
Who steps in to save the day?
US of effin A...
This is Afghanistan 1980’s without the Mujahideen or Rambo
"Radical environment groups" seem to have a strong influence on (if not outright inclusion in) the Biden gang.
It’s in their backyard. The idea they would not have ships there is preposterous.

I think if we have a pipeline running through a foreign region, then we should probably take care to guard that pipeline before deciding to invade countries in that region. That is, if we would like to keep our pipeline.
Seems pretty common sense to me, but common sense is in short supply around here lately.
Do you know where those pictures were taken? How long ago?
Perhaps the Russian subs were there to deter saboteurs.
Pretty stupid of dopey Joe to threaten to and then blow up a pipeline that was feeding a supposed ally of the U.S. regardless of the source - especially if we are not at war with that source country. But then again, he is famous for stupidity.
If pedojoe and his chickenhawk amen corner want a war with russia, then he should stop being a pussy and to go to Congress to ask for a formal declaration.
He might as well. And toss Germany into the mix of enemy combatants since his act of sabotage was an act of war against the krauts as well as the russkies.
If most of the flow of natural gas through the pipeline was already cut off, primarily to influence the Germans, then this brings another aspect into consideration.
The Russians may be deliberately tormenting the Germans, and if they can get the Germans to direct blame at the Americans, and Joe Biden specifically, it is a win-win for them. Drives a huge wedge in the NATO alliance, and sows distrust for many years to come.
Intrigue on a level to rival that of the Byzantine empire centuries ago.
Wheels inside wheels.
Well, if he did do that, then Germany is in no position to do much of anything about it. They are certainly not about leave NATO and go it alone, nor will they complain to NATO that they suffered an Article 5 attack and force other NATO countries to choose between Germany and the United States. After all, you do not force such a decision when you already know the results would not go in your favor.
And Russia seems in no position to do anything about it either. The best they have offered is sending their propaganda army out to continue spamming the internet with their grievances, which isn’t going to help them win their little war.
I’m not buying it, why blow up your own pipeline which they now say may never be usable again.
If Biden loudly condemns the attack against the pipeline, then the Russians did it (although the motive is difficult to imagine). If he doesn't, then it's a US operation, IMHO.
Why WOULDN’T Europe point the finger at Russia?
