Ukrainian troops are encircling Russian forces in Lyman, an occupied town in the northeast of the country, as Kyiv presses on with its counteroffensive to recapture seized territory.
Maps detailing Ukrainian advance in the region amid a continued counteroffensive show its forces moving north across the Siverskyi Donets river from areas east and west of town, and east across the Oskil river from positions north of Lyman.
The British Defense Ministry assessed on Wednesday that over the last few days, Ukraine has pressed its offensive operations in the northeast of the country. Its units advanced on at least two axes east from the line of the Oskil and Siverskyy Donets rivers, where forces had consolidated following their previous advance earlier in the month.
Mike Martin, a fellow at the Department of War Studies at King's College in London, said on Twitter that Ukrainian forces may eventually trap Russian forces in Lyman.
"Drive flanks north and east of Lyman, causing the Russians to reinforce this critical railroad junction," he tweeted. "Then drive a much bigger encircling movement to trap the whole lot."
It comes after a successful lightning counteroffensive by Ukraine earlier this month, which saw Kyiv recapture large swathes of its territory from Russia.

The possibility of major Russian defeat in the Lyman-Yampil area is now very high
Good luck with that. 😂😂😂
Can Russian women and children be put into the Army?
No way to know for a few days. The tipoff will be if/when Russian media reports the fall of Lyman.
Nice maneuver if they can pull it off. The Russians can probably read the map as well as we can though, so we’ll just have to wait and see.
The tip off will be when the Russian telegram nationalists say there is no reason to panic about the situation in Lyman.
We’ll know when we see the Russian media discuss the ‘regrouping’ to the east.
The Russian generals must have burned everything they had trying to make the gains they were supposed to make, and just fried their offensive firepower in the process.
If Russia was going to use tactical nukes, this would be the place.
What is the term for an army getting pinched in three directions, about to be cut off? There’s a name for that.
Hell of a welcome present!
I believe it’s called getting the “Bobbitt” treatment.
Encirclement. Like the Germans at Stalingrad.
CC
This might be a true encirclment, unlike to the BS “encirclements” and “caldrons” of Ukrainians parroted by the putards...we shall see..
My thoughts exactly. The world has gotten very nuts, very quickly - the Biden election was just one of the symptoms of a larger spiritual darkness descending.
And that is the Russian map, maintained by pro-Russian persons based on information from Russian sources on Telegram.
Yup
Indeed, the Russian map is generally more timely than the one based on Ukrainian sourced (deepstate). The Ukrainians havent claimed that advance through the forest area north of the river, almost cutting whats now the Russian MSR (main supply route).
Russian forces in this “cauldron” probably aren’t more than 5-6,000 men. Still, it would be a significant victory if the Ukrainians pull it off.
