Hurricane Ian is quickly gaining monstrous strength as it moves over oceans partly heated up by climate change, just like 30 other Atlantic tropical storms since 2017 that became much more powerful in less than a day.
As the world warms, this turbo-charging of storms is likely to become even more frequent, scientists say.
While climate change doesn’t create Ian and other hurricanes, scientists say that a warming world means an increase in rapidly intensifying storms. Climate change also is making storms slower and wetter, worsening deadly storm surges through sea-level rise, increasing freshwater flooding and expanding the proportion of monster Category 4 and 5 storms, like Fiona last week, several studies show.
The current hurricane season had been uncharacteristically mild until about a week ago because of dry air in the Atlantic. Yet while storms aren’t necessarily more frequent, they are getting nastier because of global warming, experts say.

fascinating that you were actually there in 1969...iv’e studied Camille for many years..talked to people from Pass Christian ...Long Beach..Bay St Louis, and all said they couldn’t believe how loud the roar of the storm was when she made land fall. I have a copy of the After Action report from the Louisiana Army Corps and it goes into detail how the lower parishes of Louisiana were swept clean....the Mississippi coast got most of the news coverage, but Louisiana also took a terrible beating. The little day light video that exists of Camille are all from Boothville and Venice Louisiana...and it is astonishing...

Yeah, Pass Christian and headed toward Gulfport Biloxi was real ugly. Bay St Louis/Waveland were on the west side of it (not by much) and it was ugly. Sadly, Waveland got taken out by Katrina. We drove through and the stores and even a house I lived in were gone. Not much left on the gulf side of the railroad tracks. Like armageddon stuff. Just think of how much debris is sitting in the water off shore.

As (if) earth warms it gets warmer faster at the poles. This has been observed, it is based on science.
This means that the tempt differential twixt poles and equator decreases — reducing the energy to generate big storms.
Time is a great magazine. They’re so full of it you can fertilize an entire lawn by holding the magazine over it.
