General Motors pushed back the start of a return-to-office plan after facing fierce resistance from employees over its handling of the rollout.
The Detroit-based auto giant rankled corporate employees by announcing in a memo last Friday afternoon that they would be required to work onsite at least three days per week beginning later this year.
But GM executives reversed course in an update to staffers on Tuesday – saying the plan won’t be implemented until the first quarter of next year at the earliest. The company also apologized for the manner in which employees learned of the change.
“We acknowledge that the timing of the message, late on a Friday afternoon, was unfortunate. It was also unintentional,” GM CEO Mary Barra and other executives said in a memo to employees obtained by The Post.

GM employees took to online message boards to vent their frustration, including Blind, an anonymous corporate forum which verifies employees using their professional email accounts.
One worker wrote “General Motors is doomed” in response to the policy.
“So many people were already on the edge of leaving because of low pay and now this ####,” the worker wrote, adding, “they will never retain young talent.”
“Anyone find it interesting last month GM leaders say wfh is new standard and now we are forced to return with no heads up? If they are trying to push us out they are doing a good job,” another worker wrote.

For many it’s the commute. If my wife and l were still working our monthly gas bill would be in the $800 to $1200 dollar range. We were not unique
One division of a large client we work with tried to force everyone back into the office in the spring of 2021 only to lose a full third of their staff. It was like a river flowing out the door, because the departed stepped right into new jobs in their field at a higher salary. The new employers likely calculated in the lower costs due to working remote and cut the new hires some of that.
The division that lost a third of their staff is likely doomed. They've been trying to unload their work onto other divisions because they can't attract talent despite having to seriously up the ante. No one wants to take a new job in that mess and those who are still there are clocking time until retirement. No one is going to push them around and they refuse to kill themselves trying to bridge the gaps created by missing a third of the staff. I've witnessed double departures where one says "if you go, I go, because I'm not going to get stuck with everything rolling down hill."
The division is scrambling to figure out what they can outsource but that's not going to come cheap and they may find the have no takers anyway. Temps didn't help and may have made it worse. Some didn't last a week, only one lasted a month. Word spread quick that it's a complete mess. Those who were training the temps apparently told management they weren't going to train temps anymore after wasting time on two or three apiece.
Another company we deal with has hired a few retirees three days a week, one of which is in the office. These aren't on the fringes either. Two in particular are in key roles with staff reporting to them. Imagine working full time for a part time boss. It's inevitable that work falls off the boss's plate onto subordinates but we'll see how that works out.
With all due respect, Boomers gave us the SDS, the Weather Underground, campus left-tardism, the sexual revolution, the drug culture, crappy music and the Manson Family.
Sincerely,
GenX
Please provide examples of that. Also provide examples of classic GenX music.
Until GM shareholders get rid of Mary Barra the company will continue to fail.
Lazy? Good-for-nothing?
Some of these whiz-kids have built weapons that would overwhelm any military remotely without sacrificing American lives like we did in WWII.
For decades now, we've traded technology for blood due to what these bright and motivated people have done.
Smart bombs, satellite communications, SIGINT, COMINT, etc., enabled one B-1 or B-2 to successfully destroy in one strike what would have taken waves of bombers in WWII. All those young men, risking their lives in metal tubes to bring the fight to an enemy whereas now, the technology is going further than it ever has:

My sense is that the success you describe is more the exception than the usual outcome.
“Hire new ones fresh from college.”
You’re kidding, right? Have you seen what colleges are turning out these days? GM would be better off hiring high school shop class students.

It was said half younger in cheek but only half. When the Wrecking Crew is recording all the albums for the chart topping bands, you know something is up.
Tongue in cheek. Stupid auto-correct
From my experience he is correct ...
I have to disagree with most of that. Campus left-tardism started with Wilson and his ilk years before the WWII generation gave birth to the boomers. The gift that continued to give was with the progs Wilson birthed giving us Social Security and other FDR policies as well as the drug culture brought on by prohibition of drugs/alcohol. The music is up for debate, however. Manson was a crazy like all the crazies in every decade.
You’re right. But GM needs to show they’re serious. And they have to do that by firing their corporate staff. If they’re not showing up to work, what’s the point?
Did Tom Petty employ the Wrecking Crew? How about Steely Dan?
It might work at a micro level. For your office, it may be fine to work remotely.
But for a large corporation like GM, I don't think so.
On the campus tards, I agree the seeds were planted well before the sixties but the Boomers were the first harvest of hate America radicals and it was a bumper crop.
That. Is a flat. out. Lie.
The point is “Is the work getting done?”

Steely Dan employed the very best studio musicians around and proudly credited them. The Byrds employed the Wrecking Crew and let you think it was the Byrds on the recordings. You won’t find Hal Blaine and Carol Kaye in the credits.
Doubt it.
