Two undersea pipelines crucial to delivering Russian natural gas to Germany were hit with mysterious leaks on Thursday, prompting concerns of sabotage.
Why it matters: The Nord Stream 1 and 2 pipelines have been central to the energy crisis that has enveloped Europe in the wake of Russia's invasion of Ukraine.
While Nord Stream 2 hasn't entered commercial operation — its certification was halted on the eve of the invasion — Nord Stream 1 provided a crucial pathway for Russian gas to reach Europe until earlier this month, when Russia closed the pipeline citing maintenance concerns. The big picture: Two leaks were detected in the Nord Stream 1 pipeline and one in the Nord Stream 2 pipeline. While neither pipe was operating at the time the leaks were discovered, both were filled with gas, Reuters reported.
Nord Stream AG confirmed in a statement that "the Nord Stream 1 control center registered a pressure drop on both strings of the gas pipeline," adding that an investigation is underway. Sweden's Maritime Authority issued a warning for ships to maintain a five nautical mile distance from the sites of the leaks, which were registered near the Danish island of Bornholm.

It is curious, who benefits by damaging the Nord Stream pipeline. Though possible I doubt it would be Poland. Who has the capability to put giant holes in pipelines without being detected, and what motive would they have? Very bizarre.

I read 3 blasts. The first was NS2. Then two more on NS1. NS2 was not really online yet so that, alone, could have been a warning shot. But taking out NS1 is much more serious.
Like others I doubt Russia would do it to themselves. They don’t need to. They can just shut the valves without destroying the infrastructure. Any theory could be explored since Germany is such an economic powerhouse in the Eurozone, just about anyone would want to take them down a few pegs.
The problem is the collateral damage lack of energy would do to the populations. So you could run the gamut from left wing environmental terror to oil & gas companies who want to prove a point to any nation state that could benefit. Can Iran export LNG? They have submarines too. They could be pushing to get a nukes for trade deal done quickly.

The Danish prime minister has said she “cannot rule out” sabotage after three leaks were detected on Russian natural gas pipelines running under the Baltic Sea to Europe.
The Swedish Maritime Administration said on Tuesday that two leaks were discovered in the Nord Stream 1 pipeline, which partly runs in Swedish waters. Danish authorities also have confirmed the leaks.
The Danish Maritime Authority has issued a navigation warning and established a prohibited area with the aim of ensuring that ships do not sail near the leaks.

I see no shortage of gas in US domestically, the shipments to Europe can’t be increased shortly and then it is against the US imperative where Europe is as much a target as Russia is.

They say it was sabotage. No Fly Zone established by Denmark. No maritime traffic allowed near the leaks.
Both of Nord Stream 1’s two lines are affected, while one of Nord Stream 2’s pipelines showed a drop in pressure.
A more scary image is of America voting for Biden(with all his scandalous bagage) over Trump.
Trump never wanted Nordstream2 so that issue is off the table in 2024. I’m sure he’ll push for more American energy exports to Europe as he advocated for in his famous speech in Poland during his first term.
Not only gas pipelines, but must of the global internet traffic runs on undersea fiber optic cables.

You are living in a delusion of the distant past. Even if it wanted to, Germany cannot rearm. It’s factories are already shutting down from lack of natural gas to run them.

Russia controls the input to the pipelines with valves. They can turn the pressure on and off at will. As long as the pipelines are undamaged, Russia holds more face cards and has more options.
What happened today, was that Europe lost any chance to reconsider sanctions against Russia in return for more gas.
Who, pray tell, might want to forestall ANY opportunity for Europe to reconsider sanctions against Russia, as winter sets in, people freeze, and factories shut down, leading to mass unemployment, depression, and possibly riots that could overturn governments?
Think hard. Ponder. Did Russia cut off Europe’s gas? NO. Europe put sanctions on Russia and said, “We won’t buy your gas.” But the option to reconsider sanctions, and buy Russian gas again, was always open. Russia held the valves, and was always willing to honor contracts and keep selling gas.
Now, after the Nordstream pipelines were blown today, the option of Europe reconsidering anti-Russian sanctions is closed for at least this winter. Only America can send them gas (and we can’t send half of what they need.)
Here is an analogy. A guy you don’t like much owns a golden goose. Every day it lays a golden egg, and you buy the gold egg on favorable terms. Every day, long term contract. You do massive jewelry business, whatever.
Now, you get into a fight with the owner of the goose, on behalf of one of your richer friends who hates the guy even MORE than you hate him. You are pressured into not buying any of they guy’s golden eggs. Your rich friend assures you that soon the owner of the golden goose will come to you, begging you to buy the eggs again, because his income has been cut off.
But it doesn’t work out the way your rich friend said. Turns out, Mr. Golden Goose can sell golden eggs to other people. He’s not going broke. You, the big league jeweler, you ARE going broke without the gold.
Now, is it logical, do you believe, that under any circumstance, the owner of the golden goose is going to break the neck of his golden goose and kill it, out of a fit of pique, because you refused to buy its golden eggs?

There is the answer. To find out where the damage is they should still launch a pipe pig that measures pipewall thickness by X-ray. It gives them exact location and extent of pipe damage. Pipe should slowly fill with seawater and pipe pressure should increase as flow stops. Out of gas and out of luck. By now, authorities must know what happened. If the line break is complete they will have a hell of a time, pumping out the seawater and line is probably unusable before winter. I still think the explosions(with time delay) were set by frogmen who are less detectable than small metal submarine. Yes, the problems are now starting to surface even before winter sets in. Germany must be in a panic mode. Poor Krauts. EU members meeting in Brussel while slowly sipping Jagermeister and calling American counterparts. Biden unaware of situation while in protective custody in basement. Hope Greta and Algore are awake.That’s what happens when the world puts incompetent climate changers in charge.
