OTTAWA — Prime Minister Justin Trudeau has agreed to let a cabinet order enforcing mandatory COVID-19 vaccination requirements at the Canadian border expire at the end of this month.
The news was confirmed by two senior government sources, who spoke to The Canadian Press on the condition they not be named because they were not authorized to speak publicly.
The federal government is still deciding whether to maintain the requirement for passengers to wear face masks on trains and airplanes.
Masking rules for airplanes and trains are not contained in the same order and will be discussed separately.
The federal cabinet is meeting this afternoon but cabinet approval is not required to allow the order to expire, as the version agreed to in June said it would expire on Sept. 30.
The order that is expiring also affects mandatory and random testing for international travellers.
If Canada lifts its vaccine mandate, then U.S. tourists can travel north of the border freely.

Sure... that goes without saying but I think you missed my point. The reality has been that since both countries had the restrictions in place, they basically offset each other as far as tourists spending money in each other’s countries. Besides, in the past pre-WuFlu, there was much more Canadian tourist dollars spent in the U.S. then vice versa. Mind you with the beating the CDN $ has taken lately, that certainly is attractive for the tourists going north....
So now, based on his own words, Trudeau has unacceptable views.
Not surprised that it was you that caught me!
We won’t go back to Canada til that’s gone, too.
It’s amazing what a new freedom minded Leader of the Opposition Pierre Polilievre can do to Mr. Castro...uh Trudeau.
My wife and I canned a trip over this.
But I think Mr. Polilievre is greasing the skids here.
Trudeau has full throated opposition right now.
Well spoken.
I mean that.
The only thing I miss is the Forest City Velodrome in London.
Now we have the Lexus Velodrome in Detroit, so I literally no reason to go to Canada for anything ever.
Amen! For at least two years and I think 3, I could not enter Alberta at Sweetgrass, Montana for my annual trip down the Yukon River where I spend thousands of dollars in the local economies. All because I would not take an experimental drug. Like me, I imagine millions of people cancelled trips into beautiful Canada costing local Canadian businesses millions.
The whole policy of not letting Americans “drive through” Alberta because of an alleged disease that, if you get it, amounts to not much more than a headache (for most) is probably the dumbest government policy in the entire history of dumb government policies. You might say that Covid is now the all time KING of dumbness for government politicians and agencies worldwide.
I best not get started on the VA and masking - I’m not alone.
Thanks for that link. People hate Trudeau’s federal government and will be glad to see this dropped.

Calif dept of health web site had a rule stating that hearing impaired folks and those communicating with them were permanently exempt from wearing masks, but when I told the VA hospital in Westwood CA this, they told me that they followed fed rules, not state rules.
One of the things that makes it a great trip is that it's not in a big city. It's located in the small town of Eveleth, up in the heart of the Iron Range of northern Minnesota. That region has been a hockey hotbed for generations, and that's some beautiful country up there.
