DETROIT (AP) — The National Transportation Safety Board is recommending that all new vehicles in the U.S. be equipped with blood alcohol monitoring systems that can stop an intoxicated person from driving.
The recommendation, if enacted by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, could reduce the number of alcohol-related crashes, one of the biggest causes of highway deaths in the U.S.
The new push to make roads safer was included in a report released Tuesday about a horrific crash last year in which a drunk driver collided head-on with another vehicle near Fresno, California, killing both adult drivers and seven children.
NHTSA said this week that roadway deaths in the U.S. are at crisis levels. Nearly 43,000 people were killed last year, the greatest number in 16 years, as Americans returned to roads after pandemic stay-at-home orders.
Early estimates show fatalities rising again through the first half of this year, but they declined from April through June, which authorities are hoping is a trend.

Presumed guilty until proven innocent.
What could possibly go wrong?
Alcohol is overwhelmingly bitter to me.
Ditto coffee.
Bingo! That would go a long way toward solving almost every problem in America.
Once upon a time jurisprudence addressed actual malpractice. Now it is fixated on the mere potential. Nasty, slippery slope.
It will be on a subscription basis for only $29.99 a month, with no ups and no extras.
Mandatory in 37 states and 16 additional counties.
Not to worry!
It will not be functional half the time and you probably didn’t need to drive to work anyway.
No.
Foreign aid...
Defund the NTSB.
“near Fresno, California, killing both adult drivers and seven children. “
“Let my guess, illegal alien with a revoked driver’s license and previous DUI convictions? “
Given that a) the crash occured between Avenal and Coalinga and b) he didn’t have a license (not even a revoked one) and c) no news reports mention his ethnicity or name but describe the vehicles in detail - make, model, year, and even color and d) describe in detail what the VEHICLES did, I’d say you’re guess is spot on.
Shouldn’t that be a Birkenstock shoe these days?
Nope
Eff em.
“Nearly 43,000 people were killed last year, the greatest number in 16 years, as Americans returned to roads after pandemic stay-at-home orders.”
And how many of these deaths are alcohol related as opposed to failure to enforce basic traffic laws? In my area of NY, LEO no longer performs routine traffic enforcement so as to avoid potentially deadly encounters (the directive came from the state attorney general). As a result, traffic lights and stop signs are mere suggestions, and speed limits are voluntary.
Its not alcohol.
Its driving while covaxed.
Cripes people can’t even keep in their lanes anymore. Then you get the covax nuts who now stop like 20 feet from the intersection if they are the first car, or 20 feet from the car in front of them. People are having basic fundamental driving problems and its the covaxxed folks being impaired.
It also seems like false positives would be a problem.
Can't start your car because you rinsed with mouthwash after you brushed your teeth before you left the house? Used hand sanitizer? Oops. Sucks to be you. Guess you're gonna be late to work.
There's even some medical conditions such as gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD), acid reflux, hiatal hernia and heartburn can lead to false results on an alcohol breath test.
I haven’t seen so much blatant disregard of traffic laws since I used to drive in Mexico. Hardly ever see anyone pulled over (Tucson area).
The UAW isn’t going to like it.
The Big Three aren’t going to like it.
Anybody who has even one drink and drives afterward will not buy a new car.
The Greens won’t like it because millions of EVs will not be bought.
I suspect drinking and spitting out the contents of a 15 cent bottle of water can cause the tester to fail.
We dealt with all that earlier.
Why don’t we make a case that our arguments are better versus trying to get back to a neverneverland?
Asking for.a friend.
How about texting?
