Coal rush! Energy crisis fires global hunt for polluting fuel

DAR ES SALAAM (Reuters) - The sleepy Tanzanian port of Mtwara mainly dealt in cashew nuts until late last year. Now it bustles with vessels loading up with coal, as Russia's invasion of Ukraine drives a worldwide race for the polluting fuel.

Tanzania traditionally exports thermal coal only to neighbouring countries in east Africa; sending it further afield was out of the question, as it required trucking the material more than 600 km from mines in its southwest to Mtwara, the nearest Indian Ocean port.

Europe's crippling energy crisis has changed all that.

Prices for thermal coal, used to generate electricity, have leapt to record levels as a result of the war, which has led to many European countries losing access to vital supplies of natural gas and coal from their top provider Russia.

Buyers in Europe and beyond are now vying to pay top dollar for coal from often remote mines in places such as Tanzania, Botswana and even potentially Madagascar. The resurgent coal demand, driven by governments trying to wean themselves off Russian energy while keeping a lid on power prices, clashes with climate plans to shift away from the most polluting fossil fuel.

"European players, after the Russian war, are going to any place where there is coal," Rizwan Ahmed, managing director of coal miner Bluesky Minings said in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania. "They are offering to pay very good prices."

The lunatic green Germans won’t dig up their own coal. They hypocritically import it from anywhere They are also burning wood pellets as a “renewable energy source”. BTW American forests are being denuded especially in the South of old growth trees to produce those wood pellets.

One of the few GOOD THINGS resulting from Europe’s boycotting of Russian fuel is that Europe is in the process of transferring their wealth to Africa (in this case), the US (for natural gas), and likely much of the rest of the world.

...and with Europe becoming destitute thanks to their boycotting of Russian fuel, their Globalist Dreams will remain just that - DREAMS.

Not around here. We are getting out of coal based energy. The power plants are closing like falling dominos. I’m sure the experts have this “transition” well planned. Barry raises his evil head again.

West VA and the Coal Belt of the mid Atlantic states could be bustling by sending coal to Europe if only..........

NO THEY ARE NOT. Stop spreading the preservationist BS.

First of all, wood pellets are made from sawdust. It is a by product from the manufacture of lumber. No different than making paper. They do not cut down trees to make pellets, paper, shavings or any other by product. It is a salvage sale for the sawmill.

Secondly, there are no old growth forests being dunuded(whatever that means) in the southern USA.
They are currently building at least a dozen sawmills in MS, AL, LA, AR because there is more timber available in those states than any other place in the WORLD. All the largest international lumber producers have or in the process of building sawmills in the south central USA because it has the cheapest timber in the world. They are reducing production in BC and northern Europe.

As well planned as the Afghanistan withdrawal.

Wait, are you telling me that they are not cutting down old growth trees, capturing the spotted owls that used to live in those trees and then sacrificing them on altars to Baal?

But, but, that is what they taught me in high school so it must be true!

No worries, Germans will not freeze this winter. Germans have saved all that winter clothing used by German soldiers during invasion of Russia near end of WW II.

How do kudzu vines do if made into wood pellets? Seems like a good use for it.

Bamboo would probably also be good as a woody fuel. I did some research on that many years ago, and I don't remember the exact details, but I recall it being somewhere between poplar and switchgrass in terms of fuel crops.

It has even more natural gas in the ground and in the form of natural gas hydrates offshore on either coast.

“And the Germans smirked when Trump tried to warn them of too much dependence on Russian oil and gas”

The Germans correctly saw it as a play by Trump to move-in on the Russian supply of energy to Europe. I suspect they laughed at Trump because our LNG would have cost several times more their pipeline gas (my guess, not sure of exact numbers, other than Russian gas was very cheap).

The problem is they thought they could both have cheap Russian gas, while trying to ‘weaken’ and eventually overthrow the government of the country that was supplying it to them.

Oh well - should have chosen one or the other - either pay more for US energy and try to overthrow Putin, or keep the very cheap Russian energy and leave Putin alone.

Trying to do both (overthrow Putin and still have cheap fuel) was TOTALLY IDIOTIC...and now they’re learning it the hard way.

West Virginia is exporting a lot of coal, to Europe as well as Asia, India, et al. IDK about any other “coal belt” states. Wyoming and Illinois are flourishing though.
