Your argument is oversimplistic and I believe wrong.

Slavery was indeed a caste system, but when it was abolished, that caste system didn't go away, it simply got applied to everyone else in the nation who was not part of the rich elite in the northeast.

A small number of Southern whites became very wealthy as a result of forced labor by their slaves on their plantations, but a lot of that wealth was destroyed in the Civil War.

And here is something you apparently don't know. Southern slavery made Northeaster whites more wealth than it did for the Southern plantation owners who actually ran the slavery.

The numbers I have seen indicate 60% of all slave production ended up in the pockets of Northeastern "robber barons" and Washington DC.

Once you understand that this is true, you begin to see a light on why the "North" was so adamant about keeping the South in the Union.

My recollection is that Southern slavery produced between 5oo and 700 million per year going into Northern pockets.

Over 70% of millennials believe all millionaires inherited their worth! But the fact is, less than 3% of all millionaires inherited their wealth! Sadly, over 50% of baby boomers believe this same myth - millionaires all inherited their wealth.

When you realize how many people think that most rich people simply woke up one day rich, you see why people may think the government (or someone) should "redistribute" that wealth.
