'The Woman King' glorifies African slave-trading kingdom

Although presented in the film as an underdog, the real-world version of the kingdom is notable for its vast contributions to the Atlantic slave trade, and its brutality toward its captives from its subjugated neighbours.

Viola Davis’ latest action film, “The Woman King,” glorifies the Agojie, the female fighting force of the west African Kingdom of Dahomey in the 19th century.

Although presented in the film as an underdog, the real-world version of the kingdom is notable for its vast contributions to the Atlantic slave trade, and its brutality toward its captives from its subjugated neighbors.

The movie, which is currently being lauded as a celebration of African resilience and womanhood due to its fierce depiction of black Amazonian warriors, couldn’t be further from the reality of the Dahomey kingdom, which was first put in its place by the British for the practice of slavery, and later defeated by the French.

The movie lauds the Dahomey warriors as underdogs that punched up and defeated French colonialists, as depicted in vivid and highly imaginative fight scenes showcasing the Agojie’s martial prowess against superior French firearms.

Never happen. I suspect this movie will be a boxoffice dud.

Big time.

The woman wasn’t the King, she was the General of the army.

And her whole army was wiped out with only 6 in the French Army being lost.

Boudicca at least killed many Romans and won a few skirmishes here and there before being routed.

History vs Hollywood
Dahomey not only sold people into slavery, they also practiced cannibalism and human sacrifice. Dahomey was a very evil country that should not be celebrated in movies.

Dahomey was slave traders heaven...This is the biggest reason progressives refuse to talk about slavery in any way except bad white people....I’m willing to bet that majority of blacks know nothing about the reality of Africa and slavery...

The captives would be sold to western slavers, Arab slavers or sacrificed.

They were dead if they stayed in Africa after being caught. Castrated and maybe early death if sold to Arabs.

Hi.

I gotta say the queen of Sheba was an interesting figure of history.

Had slaves and eunuchs.

Also did the horizontal bop with king Solomon.

Incoming!

Hey now, slave trading is just part of their culture and postmodernism teaches us that we cannot judge their cultural norms because of our own inherent biases.

“I wish Hollywood would switch gears and feature black contributions to science and technology. Something positive for a change.”

Please name one or more black contributions to science and technology. And medicine in particular.

Beyond the slave trade by black Africans, most Americans of all races also seem to have no idea that 1) the Muslim world took massive numbers of African slaves too, 2) far more African slaves were taken to Latin America and the Caribbean than the US, 3) historically slavery was practiced widely throughout the world with all races and most ethnicities effected, and 4) millions of white people were also enslaved by various different nations including especially the Muslim Ottoman Empire.

Considering how fixated the left is on slavery, leftist schools sure churn out students with really narrow and limited knowledge about slavery. One might almost think this was done on purpose to manipulate people politically and socially…

off the top of my head, there are George washington Carver and Ben Carson...two other figures of special note would be Frderick Douglass and Booker T. Washington...

I’d like them to do a movie about the African Jollof tribe.

Charles Darwin described the members, in his book “The Descent of Man”, as exceptionally good looking. He asked a member of the tribe how he thought that came to be.

The tribe member replied that they were in the habit of selling their ugly women to slavers.

apparently all we need to know about slavery is in the pages of Uncle Tom’s Cabin...
