The rot runs deep in the Russian war machine. Ukraine is exposing it for all to see

For Russia, the numbers are catastrophic.

From Wednesday to Sunday, Vladimir Putin’s military forces saw at least 338 pieces of important military hardware – from fighter jets to tanks to trucks – destroyed, damaged or captured, according to numbers from the open source intelligence website Oryx, as Ukraine’s forces have bolted through Russian-held territory in an offensive that has stunned the Russians in its speed and breadth.

Ukraine’s top military commander claimed on Sunday that more than 3,000 square kilometers (1,158 square miles) of territory had been retaken by his country’s forces since the beginning of September. And for more perspective, just “since Wednesday, Ukraine has recaptured territory at least twice the size of Greater London,” the British Defense Ministry said Monday.

Ukrainian reports say Putin’s troops are fleeing east to the Russian border in whatever transport they can find, even taking cars from the civilian population in the areas they had captured since the start of the war in February.

In their wake they leave hundreds of pieces of the Russian war machine, which since Putin’s so-called “special military operation” commenced, has not come close to living up to its pre-war billing as one of the world’s great powers.

These Russian losses are the accumulation of a multitude of existing problems that are now colliding head-on with a Ukrainian military that has been patient, methodical and infused with billions of dollars of the Western military equipment that Russia cannot match.

Their goal is to make you feel powerless. To make you think the truth is impossible to know. To make you look at the shiny object. To isolate you from friends. And to make you feel that they are inevitable.

Don’t let them win.

“I don’t believe a word coming from any side in this disaster and that includes the mainstream American press and the American government.”

Fair enough but you logically have to believe all sides when all sides agree. And all sides - including the Russians - say the Russians suffered a huge set back.

It is a time honored axiom of the law that statements made against interest are regarded to be highly credible because that statement runs counter to the human motivation to lie. Indeed, so persuasive are statements against interest that they are exceptions to the hearsay rule, that is, they are admitted into evidence even though not subject to cross-examination because they are universally regarded to be credible.

In the wake of this Ukrainian success we have had many statements emanating from Russian soldiers, Russian politicians, Russian generals all, in effect, statements against interest which might be regarded to be credible. That is, they all testify to the stunning effect of the Ukrainian advance and the demoralization of the Russian defenders.

One might say that we should discount any news report of any kind so therefore it doesn’t matter whether the statements are made against interest, we simply can’t believe any statement. However, there are many, many statements, one confirming the other, and everyone counter to presumed self interest. I think we can believe the overall tenor of confirming statements coming from various sources especially when they run contrary to self-interest.

I think there is much to be accepted here, taken, of course, with a grain of salt which you so wisely recommend.

Funny how they can enumerate exact numbers and types of military equipment left behind in Ukraine by Russians but no such detailed list of what the U.S. left in Afghanistan. Or Iraq for that matter...

Oh what we do without the Trump hatin” RAT hero Zelensky. Perhaps he should expose the rot right under his own nose that he is helping break America for. I hope he pays a big price for his actions.

Quite frankly, they don’t anymore. Especially now since Zelensky came out and trashed Trump the other day.

This conservative does not support globalists. This useless war in the Ukraine is to make the world safe for globalism. All the “right” people (globalists) are supporting the Ukraine, therefore I am not supporting the Ukraine.

One must remember that the Russian government, no matter who is running it, lies about everything and has been for over a century. They lie reflexively even when the truth might do them some good.

I have a brother like that. His first instinct is to lie. And he will lie about anything even when everyone around him know he’s doing it. When confronted he will simply up the ante on his falsehoods. It’s like trying to nail Jell-O to a wall.

Russia lied about shooting down that Korean air liner for months even after being caught dead to rights with radar and recordings of the Russian Air Force.

They lied about developing chemical and biological weapons even after the fall of the Soviet Union when millions of tons of the stuff was found and shown to the world.

The Venona Papers documented the depths of their dishonesty going back decades.

They lied about their intentions towards Ukraine for months claiming the preparations were simply training exercises right up to the moment that tens of thousands of Russian troops crossed the border and started killing people.

That does not make the Ukrainian government good guys by any stretch of the imagination. This war is tragedy brought on by two school yard bullies. They’ve been fighting over there for the last 500 years and they’ll be fighting each other for the next 500 years.

We should have stayed the hell out of this mess. It’s a European problem and that’s who should be dealing with it. Giving the Ukrainian government billions in US taxpayer money and American military hardware is insanity.

Deeds, not flags, mark the true Nazis.

Tell that to the thousands of Russian speakers in eastern Ukraine murdered by Zelenskyy thugs.

Hope this isn’t a giant ambush.

If it is, the Russians are giving up a lot of real estate and abandoning a lot of military hardware to achieve it. So, likely not.

I note that every one of the lies you cited were lies made by Russians IN SUPPORT of their self interest.

You may be quite right about the advisability of supporting Ukrainians in this war, but we should not therefore automatically jump from that opinion to a conclusion about whether the news is true or false.

“but we should not therefore automatically jump from that opinion to a conclusion about whether the news is true or false.”

I believe evidence, myself. But all I see are conflicting claims about who’s “winning”. Claims are not evidence no matter how forcefully they’re made.

And in my experience the best indicator of future behavior is past behavior. On that score it’s perfectly reasonable to doubt anything the Russians say.

Enjoy your day.
