Europeans faced with the prospects of a difficult winter due to a looming energy crisis are booking hotels and apartments in Türkiye to spend the cold months here.
The Russian invasion of Ukraine has sent electricity and gas prices skyrocketing while governments are imposing rules to lower energy consumption.
Fearing that the situation may get even worse in the coming months, Europeans are now making plans to avoid further hardship with some of them looking for accommodation in Türkiye.
After Russia cut gas supplies to Europe, people are considering spending the winter in Türkiye, they are already making reservations, said Ferman Ademhan, from the Anatolian Tourism Administrators’ Association (ATİD).
“This winter is likely to be a good season for hoteliers. Europeans and people from the U.K. are renting houses for three months. They will be able to afford a long and nice stay in Türkiye with the money they otherwise would have to spend on electricity and gas bills,” he said, winter months may offer huge opportunities for the tourism industry.
Are they going to get the same reception as all of the Americans relocating to Mexico City?
Europe could use fuel injectors and vaporizers to vaporize gasoline to run power plants.
Oil heat could be used to heat European homes. Oil-based residential heating used to be common in the northeastern US. My uncle paid 12 cents per gallon in 1948.
In the early 1980s I knew a former serviceman who toured Turkey on a motorcycle.
He said the Turks were often not very nice to him.
I spend much of April 2016 in the UK.
My hosts didn’t spend a pound on heat for me during the time I was there.

They don't change when they leave either. Spent a cold night in a house in the States owned by a Brit working here. I thought there was an issue with the furnace but no, they just kept the thermostat low.
Wasn't much of an issue but would have been nice to have been warned beforehand. Would have brought the sleeping bag and thermal underwear if I had known.
Turkey seems a little too close to the impending fallout for my liking.

On the south coast of Turkey, for Jan/Feb, the temp is a mild 16 C (61 F). Typically, a lot of the resort hotels would be shut down for this period, but I would imagine some are trying to entire folks.
I did the math (natural gas heat now 4 to 5 times what it was in 2020). If you left in December, and returned in late March...you’d spend the same amount of money...either way. Airline ticket, hotel/resort room, 3 meals a day...all covered for 100 days.
Went there for two weeks in 2010. Amazing country, clean, safe, friendly people and great food!

Yes, it is perfectly logical to want to avoid a $300 / month increase in one's heating bill by booking a round-trip airplane flight and four-week hotel stay in a distant foreign country!
Just like I avoid the massive mark-up for oranges my corner grocer charges by flying to Florida myself, and buying them at roadside stands!
Makes perfect sense!

Years ago I worked for the Hovnanian Home Builders. They’re a family of Armenian Christians.
My boss “Mr.H’’ was a nice guy, paid us good and he HATED Turks.
He said ‘’In my country we say “The Turks will toast you by saying “To you honor’’, and we say ‘’ Because Turks have none.’’
I stayed in a London hotel years ago. My room had a coin operated electric heater. I tried it. A coin would buy a few minutes of heat, but not worth it.
We were in London in May.
Apparently May is not part of the “heating season”, and the hotel’s boilers were off.
