United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres said developing nations were paying a "horrific price" for the world's reliance on fossil fuels, as he toured parts of Pakistan hit by floods blamed on climate change.
Nearly 1,400 people have died in flooding that covers a third of the country -- an area the size of the United Kingdom -- wiping out crops and destroying homes, businesses, roads and bridges.
Guterres hopes his visit will galvanise support for Pakistan, which needs at least $10 billion to repair damaged infrastructure.
"Pakistan and other developing countries are paying a horrific price for the intransigence of big emitters that continue to bet on fossil fuels," Guterres said in a tweet, shortly before heading to see some of the most flood-affected areas.
"From Islamabad, I am issuing a global appeal: Stop the madness. Invest in renewable energy now. End the war with nature."

Nope, world paying ‘horrific price’ for unnecessary wars started by the U.S. & NATO for ignoring pleas to help stop the aggression in Eastern Ukraine against some of her own citizens.
Pure bull.
I’m tired of scientific illiterates (which includes a good many “climate researchers”).
The best way to put an end to this crap is to make sure that EVERY elite has to live with the same energy restrictions as all do. No pools, no A/C, no private jets, etc. We’ll see how climate “research” suddenly determines that just perhaps the climate is not affected much, if at all, by CO2.
Self-induced economic suicide.
Stopped reading at “UN Chief says...”
“..floods blamed on climate change. ..”
Baloney! - I would appreciate it if someone would explain to me how anyone can make such a dumb statement. How do they argue that statement????
All of a sudden, this year we are short on fossil fuels? hmm I wonder why, did they just evaporate?
Guterres sounds like areal idiot to to me. These people should have had enough time to learn by now that what they want by means of “renewable green energy” can’t be done. I believe it’s been proven over & over. Why couldn’t the UN find someone smart to replace him?
Obviously he is correct because, as we all know it has never flooded in Pakistan before now. In history, prehistory or pre prehistory. /s
There is no such a thing as a fossil fuel
“End the war with nature.”
Just sit down, shut up and freeze to death. Imagine if humans had evolved 15,000 years earlier. These type nuts would be bankrupting the world to prevent that glacier from receding from Dayton to Columbus. The inmates are indeed running the asylum.
...after which, he took his gas powered limo to the airport and boarded his private jet enroute to his next climate change summit.
Until the UN and other “climate operatives” start an emergency program to build fission reactors, I will continue to believe that the “green movement” is a pagan worshipping cult. Storage tech is just neither advanced enough nor inexpensive enough to use intermittent power sources.
And if folks think this guy is bad, they should see his deputy...
$10/gal gas won’t bother these Communists in the slightest.
Did he make this comment in the cabin of his UN financed 787 while he was on his way to the Cannes Film Festival?
The usual crocodile tears from United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres and any number of predecessors. The UN continuously raises the dues (bribes) being paid by the member countries. As I understand it, there is no audit of the UN's balances or cash flows, so, if you want to vote, pay up! EXCEPT for the impoverished or 3rd World countries, their dues or in abeyance or paid by a 'friend'.
As for Pakistan, they have gotten much money from the USofA for every year we were in Afghanistan, yet they kept getting poorer. Wonder where this money went? Any one else remember the Iraq 'Oil for Food' scheme run through the UN under Sec.Gen. Butros Butros-Ghali? A genuine attempt to reduce starvation in Saddam Husain's Iraq while maintaining sanction against the ruling elites? Probably much the same in Pakistan for any 'foreign aid' that they may receive.
Time for action, not words.
When he returns to NYC he must order the United Nations to turn off the electricity to the building—permanently.
Time to walk the walk!
I wish people would stop using the term “fossil fuels.” Petrochemical is much more descriptive. Petroleum is used for a lot more than burning. Plus, I teeter on believing Tommy Gold’s hypothesis on the non-biological genesis of petroleum (even though he was wrong on the steady-state theory).
The problem with Pakistan is that the country is populated with Pakistanis.
