Ukraine has launched a new front in the counteroffensive, this time moving east into the Kharkiv region. Yesterday the Guardian reported the town of Balakliia had been encircled by Ukrainian troops.
Today, Balakliia is more than encircled. President Zelensky just published this video of Ukrainian soldiers standing on a Russian flag in the city with the Ukrainian flag flying behind them.
(snip)
And the push east has already moved on to another small town called Volokhiv Yar where the Ukrainian flag has also been raised.

Fixed it for you.
“Ukraine bares the responsibility for any civilian facility that they are storing ammo and positioning weapons in.”
Yet you have no evidence that is going on in any particular facility, and just assume that’s the case so you can excuse the Russians of any fault, because you’re rooting for them, whether they are slaughtering civilians or not.
Russia was becoming our friend under Yeltsin. Putin has worked tirelessly to reverse that. When the speaker of the Russian Duma speaks seriously of reversing the “illegal” transfer of Alaska to the United States one should take him seriously. When Putin states that “Russia knows no borders” and threatens all his European neighbors, we should listen. When Russians brag incessantly about their ability to “win” a nuclear war then we should take notice.
Insurgents... that word could be used on anyone who resists a government that is openly hostile to them.
You Putinists cheer or excuse every crime of your favored regime, giving them every Mach accolade even as they rape and murder, but when it comes to Ukraine you turn into pussies and pearl clutching grandmas.
Neocons are not MAGA republicans. They are like Liz Cheney, Adam Kinzinger, Mitch McConnell.
Just saying.
Our entire country is being taken over right now and it isn’t Russia who is doing it. This is not our fight, nor is it our biggest threat. We cannot afford this game and neither can Europe. No one can argue that this would be happening without Western instigating this conflict. They tried to impeach Trump several times over this very agenda.
Yeltsin was selling Russian wealth and resources to Western oligarchs.
No, Ukraine was attacking Russian speaking people in the East for years. That isn’t a lie and could not continue.
I remember the nazis used to complain when la resistance blew up trains and movie theaters full of fascists and their collaborators because they usually had to go through some human shields to get to the invading fascists. An unfortunate but very necessary sacrifice those noble partisans had to make to achieve their laudable goal of ensuring every fascist who set foot in their country was dead or worse.
I fully support the work of any modern successor to la resistance, no matter what unfortunate sacrifices have to be made to achieve that same goal.
I want to re-emphasize some critical points: 1. Russia attacked Ukraine with a small force that was one-third the size of the defending Ukrainian force. Advantage Ukraine and yet, despite the fact that Russia was outnumbered, Russia steadily pushed Ukraine back, taking Mariupol, Kherson and Luhansk.
2. At no point did Russia declare any kind of timeline for accomplishing its stated mission of demilitarization and denazification.
3. The bulk of the fighting from the Russian side is being handled by the militias from the Donbas. Russia has committed only a small fraction of its troops.
4. Despite a massive influx of western military aid, Ukraine has been unable to force the Russians to retreat. Those who want to point to the current Ukrainian offensive as a stunning success are ignoring Ukraine’s massive losses in men and equipment during the past week. Capturing a couple of isolated, unihabited rural villages is not exactly a 21st Century version of Omar Bradley’s Operation Cobra, which was led by General Patton and broke out of hedge row country in Normandy.

You know how worried the Russian Government is about the progress of the operation in Ukraine? Putin and his top Generals spent a week on Russia’s east coast, i.e. the Pacific, conducting a 50,000 man joint force military exercise with China and Vietnam.

et me suggest an alternative explanation for Russia’s slow, methodical approach in Ukraine. Russia is committed to the demilitarization of Ukraine. Russia’s current campaign not only is destroying Ukraine’s army and the tanks, planes, helicopters and vehicles, but it also is forcing the United States and NATO to strip themselves of weapons that will not be quickly replaced in the near term. In other words, without risking a direct confrontation with NATO, Russia also is weakening NATO. And Putin does not have to turn Ukraine into a smoldering, nuclear wasteland with millions of dead Ukrainians. Seems like a reasonable approach to me.
The weakening of NATO also is being accelerated with economic weapons–i.e., cutting off the sale of gas and oil. Without gas and oil, Europe’s war industry is grinding to a halt. I do not know if this is part of the Russian plan for the Special Military Operation or just a happy serendipity that serves Russia’s interests. Regardless, the effect hurts NATO.
I do not pretend to know what plan Russia’s General Staff is following. What I do know is that none of the weapons supplied by the United States and NATO have changed the strategic goal of Russia to demilitarize Ukraine and eliminate a NATO threat on the western border. That means Russia’s ability to continue moving west is not eliminated and Ukraine’s prospects grow more bleak.
So, you blame the West for Russia invading Ukraine? In spite of Putin’s nostalgia for all things Soviet including Russia’s usual exploited and abused client states, you blame everybody but Russia. You need to get off the Moscow misinformation flow. We can fight against Biden AND Putin AND Soros and get Trump elected. One of our biggest fights will be against the huge voter fraud machinery that is already in place. Putin does not want Trump in again. Trump overturned the Dem tradition of providing nonlethal aid and sent the first Javelins to Ukraine.
The neocons are seriously deranged and vicious. True leftist globohomos.
