Trump Ruling Lifts Profile of Judge and Raises Legal Eyebrows

MIAMI — In her just over 20 months as a federal judge, Aileen M. Cannon worked mostly in obscurity, becoming nominated and appointed to her position during the height of the coronavirus pandemic and at the end of a turbulent presidency.

Then, last month, she was assigned the most prominent case of her short judicial career, involving the very person who put her on the bench: former President Donald J. Trump.

On Monday, Judge Cannon granted Mr. Trump’s request to appoint an independent arbiter known as a special master to review materials seized last month from his private Florida club. The extraordinary and unusually broad decision, which could delay the criminal investigation into Mr. Trump, drew scrutiny from experts who questioned her legal reasoning and criticized some of the language in her opinion about what rights a former president is entitled to.

A pretty balanced and informative profile of Judge Cannon.

Without Trump-hating FBI agents and prosecutors there’s no case. Only the white-hot fury of Trump hate can make one.

The extraordinary and unusually broad decision,

Nothing extraordinary or unusually broad about it. Its the least she could do when confronted by a super corrupt, sleazy DOJ/FBI.

I’m not lawyer, but..............

What is so controversial, about the special master, who will review the documentation?

I understand it slows down this investigation into Trump, but, shouldn’t we all want proper legal procedures followed in any legal proceeding? Do the liberals oppose proper legal procedures, such as verifying the documents seized are the ones covered by the secret search warrant???

Or is this whole thing just political, in which case none of us are supposed to say anything????

Hmmm... Nothing about the extraordinarily broad search warrant that was nonetheless exceeded by the FBI in their zealous pursuit of "orange man bad".

From the excerpt, this is a hit piece.

Yeah, could you imagine?!

Even when trying to be “fair”, their bias is a mile wide on the left bank!

“Question her judicial reasoning...”

Bias Alert: the judge's findings that laws were broken, FBI rulebook was tossed, the former President was treated worse than a drug lord, and that Biden started it should all be disregarded because she's only been on the federal bench for a couple of years and was appointed by Trump.

Suuuure...

I stopped listening and taking Barr seriously when he referred to Trump's documents as storing them at a "country club". That tells me something about the guy, that he isn't serious and is political.

Had she made a different decision in this case, she would have been hailed by the left as a woman of color, and praised for her diversity.

Actually, the article focuses mostly on the judge’s career, and points out her mother was among those who escaped from Castro’s regime.
It makes it quite clear that the judge appreciates the blessings that come from living in a Free Republic.

I am a lawyer, admitted here in FL, and have been in practice for 27 years. The main point I would make is that there are standards for admission of evidence, and those apply at trial, not at this stage of an investigation. I think the special master process may be helpful, and I think the gag order that was issued will certainly be helpful, because Justice and the FBI are leaking like sieves. I assume that the special master process will kick any major developments down the calendar past the mid-terms, and that is a good thing.

The extraordinary and unusually broad decision,

Well that is because of the unusually broad seizure of materials not specified in the warrant.

I remember during the Terry Schaivo murder, erm, situation, that no MSM puppet head was calling out the Clinton-appointed judges who reviewed the case and let her be killed for insurance money.

My understanding is that documents that are covered under attorney client privelege (and perhaps executive privelege) should not be available to investigators as this would be a violation of the 6th amendment. Isn't that the purpose of the special master to protect the rights under that amendment?

Whether this judge or another down the road, the question of equal treatment has to be raised. Has NARA and the DOJ also done a raid and inventory of the homes of Carter, Bush, Clinton, Obama?
